Eastern Student Achieves U.S. Navy-Approved Welding Certification
Eastern Center for Arts and Technology and Upper Moreland High School student Paul Lowry Jr., received the Welder Training and Testing Institute for Visual Testing Level II certification.
Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) Welding Technology/Upper Moreland High School senior, Paul Lowry, Jr. received certification by the Welder Training & Testing Institute for Visual Testing Level II conducted in accordance with the U.S. Navy.
Paul is currently working through a cooperative education program with EASTERN and Revtur Welding in Warminster. Through this program, Paul attends EASTERN once a week, and works at Revtur Welding for the rest of the week. Revtur Welding is a family business owned by Paul’s father, Paul Lowry, Sr., who is an EASTERN graduate and a current Occupational Advisory Committee member. Paul always knew he wanted to be a part of the family business and started welding at 10 years old.
One of Revtur Welding’s clients, H&K Tool and Machine, Inc., obtained a contract with the U.S. Navy for welded parts to be used on a Navy ship. According to Navy welding practices, once a welder has completed a weld, another certified welder needs to inspect the weld.
With this in mind, H&K Tool and Machine offered to fund Paul’s training and certification from the Welder Training & Testing Institute.
Paul was awarded his certification on May 3, 2012. After graduation from EASTERN and Upper Moreland, Paul plans to work full-time at Revtur Welding
and to get certifications in all non-destructive testing methods. With these additional certifications, Paul will move from a Level II to a Level III Welder – which means more job opportunities and a pay increase.
EASTERN’s Welding Technology program students learn about the properties of different types of metals and how to join them using state-of-the-art welding equipment.
The program prepares students for success in such career fields as mechanical, aerospace or industrial engineering, physical metallurgist, business owner, and welding engineer.
