Challenger Tom Smith Slams Sen. Bob Casey on Economic Record

Republican Tom Smith is challenging U.S. Sen. Bob Casey on federal spending and Casey's voting record. Smith opposes abortion even in rape cases.

By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent

HARRISBURG — GOP U.S. Senate hopeful Tom Smith grew up on an Armstrong Countyfarm and spent two decades running a coal mining business, both of which he used to illustrate his political agenda.

When business is bad, “you downsize.” And if elected, that’s what he’d do to federal agencies, he said, determining which programs could be cut, if not eliminated.

Smith shared a farm analogy of a leaking tractor fuel tank to discuss how he’d treat the federal deficit.

“Do you continue to keep putting fuel in it? No. Fix the leaks,” Smith said to the media Monday during a Pennsylvania Press Club event at the Harrisburg Hilton.

But his series of fumbling comments regarding his pro-life stance, in which he appeared to liken unplanned pregnancies to those occurring from rape, garnered the most attention.

Smith said his business-owner background will help him topple incumbent U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa. But Smith has yet to resonate with Pennsylvania voters, if recent polling is any indication.

Casey leads the race with 55 percent to 37 percent, according to a Quinnipiac poll released at the beginning of August. The poll surveyed more than 1,100 voters with a margin of error of 2.9 percentage points.

A month of campaigning changed little: The Philadelphia Inquirer‘s poll released Monday shows 53 percent of polled voters will vote for or are likely to pick Casey, with 34 saying the same for Smith. The poll surveyed 601 voters with a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

As the election gets closer, the race has taken a hostile turn.

Smith laid it on first when he dubbed Casey “Senator Zero,” and called him an ineffective lawmaker who cannot get bills passed. Then, this past week, the Casey campaign launched its own review of Smith’s statements, calling him “Tea Party Tom Smith” and criticizing Smith’s stances on taxes and Medicare.

Financially, Casey has more muscle to throw behind his campaign, with $10.6 million raised as of the end of June. Smith had raised $7.9 million by the same deadline,, according to federal records compiled by the nonprofit Center for Responsive Politics.

Last week, Smith pointed out Casey’s votes to increase the debt ceiling seven times, and said the incumbent has voted in line with President Barack Obama 90 percent of the time. Throughout his speech, Smith described Casey as “a follower” and “a career politician” with “a famous political name.”

In the run-up to Election Day, Smith is bent on bringing out Casey’s record, which he said will help him curry favor with voters who are “crying for change.”

“We get our name out there, we get Bob Casey’s voting record and what our ideas are, and that will be a winning combination,” he said.

On the energy economy, Smith said the Marcellus shale gas drilling industry is an example of free enterprise system at its best, driving down costs for natural gas. When asked whether natural gas or federal regulations are hampering Pennsylvania’s coal industry, Smith said coal will come back as the global economy recovers, and coal has been fighting regulations for decades.

He also said the free enterprise system should determine what types of energy sources can fuel the nation, including renewables. The government should not “pick winners and losers,” he said.

“The people of Pennsylvania and across the country deserve the most reliable source of energy available,” Smith said. “If that’s coal and gas combined, fine, if that’s coal, gas and nuclear fine, let the free enterprise system do that.”N

Smith: No abortions in rape cases

On the topic of abortion, Smith said he is pro-life 100 percent of the time, even in cases of rape. He also said he did not agree with Missouri U.S. Rep. Todd Akin‘s recent comments on “legitimate rape.” But further explanation to defend his position landed Smith into a confusing question and answer session.

When reporters asked how he would defend his pro-life stance to a daughter or granddaughter in the case of a rape, Smith said he lived “a similar situation” with a daughter who had a child out of wedlock.

When later asked to clarify if he was comparing that situation to a case involving rape, Smith said life begins at conception, and he is against abortion at all times.

“I’m not going to argue about the method of that conception. It’s life. And I’m pro-life. It’s that simple,” he said.

Tom Smith needs to stop thinking of women's reproductive lives. Maybe Smith is a msyogenist. God gave us all Free Will to make our own choices. The MAN is overriding God.

Go Tom Smith keep reminding people that this current Senator Bob Casey is the son of a great Senator Robert Casey. Name recognition is what got Bob into office, his record should get him fired.

I am a woman, and I agree with him, if a woman or teen is a victim of rape, and there is a baby concieved of that rape, have the child, then give it up for adoption if you don't want it because it was a product of a rape. The baby is not at fault for you being raped. We see lots of women wanting to adopt in this country because they cannot have children, instead, because of so much red tape involved in the adoption process, they go and adopt oversees having so many children here waiting to be adopted. The goverment should relax the red tape and allow women here to adopt, that will make people think twice before going through a painful abortion, which in time becomes a bigger problem for the woman having that abortion, with her mind full of guilt and sorrow, ending up sometimes doing worse in her life. I am not saying all women feel regrets and guilt, some are so strong and heartless they move on like nothing.

Why do I have to be forced to live my life by your beliefs? I don't believe life begins at inception. I believe it is inhumane and disgusting to force a woman to carry a child against her will after being raped. We're not talking about a bad decision made on a friday night at a bar. We're talking about a woman surviving being violated, losing her trust, her sense of self, her sense of safety possibly for the rest of her life. And then you want to force those women to have to carry a child to term because of your beliefs. Who says your beliefs are right for everyone? I don't believe in your god or your religion so why must I be forced to live by your standards? And how dare you say that "some woman are so strong and HEARTLESS they move on like nothing"?!? That is possibly one of the most insensitive and disgusting statements I have read and it saddens me that there are people in this country who think this way.

Tom Smith is a teabagger extroadinaire. He just can't help himself; every time he talks about or gets near women, his raging sexism shines through.

Monday event at the Pennsylvania Press Club, Tom Smith said that President Obama and Sen. Casey trying to fix the economy was like "your wife wrecks the car" and tries to "take it to the beauty salon to get it fixed."

How would you tell a daughter/granddaughter who would be the victim of a rape, to keep the child against her own will?" The Associated Press' Mark Scolforo wondered.

Women be very afraid.

Criticizing Bob Casey for his "economic policy" is a waste of time. First, he'd have to create one for the years he hasn't had one.

Anyone notice how far from The President Casey stays? I haven't heard a word from him this entire election cycle. That goes for Allison Schwartz too.

Mike, really you must not really be paying attention to her, I hear from Allyson Schwartz all the time. She routinely has town halls and out reach, actually she's speaking at the DNC this week.

I could agree with you on Bob Casey though, I'd rather we had a Joe Sestak as Senator then him, but he's a better alternative then Tom Smith, rather have milk toast then burned toast.

Where I live, we take pictures of Schwartz as if she were a sasquatch. Swa her ONCE in Horsham to push the Rendell Plan for the JRB Willow Grove. Once that died on the vine, not a single word about helping out with a tough process that has to work its way through the Navy.

And other than Willow Grove, I can think of no impact she has had anywhere here.

P,S, Not sure at all what that last reference meant ... although I get Casey as the milquetoast. .

It's the economy, morons!
Tom Smith was happily in retirement and had no intention of getting into politics until he saw what Obama was doing to the middle class/poor families in Coal Country. Obama's over regulation of the EPA has caused the coal industry to practically close their doors. And Robert Casey Jr. is not only right behind Obama, he's right beside him, voting with Obama 90% of the time. And we see how fantastic Obama's "more welfare, less work" policies are doing for families.
However, the left would rather talk about social issues! How the right is waging a war on women? Really? You want to go there? Bill Clinton is opening the DNC. Clinton. The man accused twice of rape and once of sexual assault for which he was found guilty and lost his law license for 8 years. Anthony Weiner. Sending underage women pictures of his wiener via Twitter while his wife is pregnant. Democrats don't just have a war on women, they have on war on wives! Nadia - you're pro abortion? Does that mean you're racist? The black population is 13%. Over 1,500 black babies are aborted each day. 14 million black babies have been aborted since the 1960's. Look up Margo Sanger. Abortion was her means of black genocide. Numbers don't lie. People do. And in this case - 14 million aborted black children & 13% black population paints the true story.
I'd rather have a regular "Tom" represent me than a political "Bob." A thriving economy helps EVERYONE.

Tom Smith is dead in the water, no matter how close you think PA is in the polls it's still leaning Democratic and every poll has Bob Casey doing better then President Obama in the polls (most of which have him above 50%). With most people going to be voting at the top of the ticket, One supporter would hope that there was a Scott Brown/Tommy Thompson situation in the state, where the senate race is closer to the presidential race. At this time there really isn't much of that going on, with increased democratic turnout from 2010 (D's seem to only show up for President for some reason) where Sestak narrowly lost, I don't see a situation where Tom Smith comes even into striking territory of Bob Casey. If you are looking for a pickup, Tom Smith was not the candidate to do it, the only press he's really gotten lately, was his extremely mishandled response to the Aktin's statement, whether handled fairly or not, most voters will look at him and say he's probably not ready for the big time.

Smith is out of touch with 21st century.
A rep candidate from Pa said that out-of-wedlock pregnancy was similar to rape is being accused of a second sexist comment after video emerged of him telling women at a Paul Ryan campaign event that he assumed they were "talking about shoes."
Smith said, explaining that his daughter had gotten pregnant "out of wedlock."
That’s similar to rape?" Scolforo pressed.
"No, no, no, but… yes. It is similar," Smith replied

Tom Smith said: Do I condone rape?" "Absolutely not." He added: "I am pro-life, period. . . . A life is a life, and it needs to be protected."

appearing at the monthly Pennsylvania Press Club luncheon, Smith argued for rolling back the Affordable Care Act.

Smith doesn't care about women and he doesn't care about the health of Americans. Just another greedy, self-serving business man who is bored in retirement and now wants to be a senator...just like Corizine of New Jersey !

Why, oh why, aren't Republicans doing better with women? I mean, they've got guys like this:

Tom Smith is generous, he "allowed" his wife to get a new dress for the event he was speaking at. He's relatable, making a point of talking to the little ladies.

Smiht said "You women and your bad driving and beauty salons. Aren't you precious!"

that's the 2012 Republican Party. It's hardly a wonder that they don't think women are capable of making their own decisions about our health care and our bodies. We're too busy wrecking cars and thinking about shoes, as Smith is quoted saying.
