ADA Karen Ricca Fired

The head of the county's Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program was suspended in April.

According to The Times Herald, Karen Ricca, the assistant district attorney who was inexplicably suspended on April 27, was fired today during a county salary board meeting. Ricca and District Attorney Risa Ferman declined to comment on the cause of the original suspension at the time and today, Ferman would only say that an investigation revealed Ricca's conduct "was entirely inconsistent with the high standards we have tried to maintain. She has therefore been terminated, effective immediately." "I will not comment on the specifics of this matter because it remains under investigation," Ferman told the Herald. Ricca led – and decided whether applicants qualified for – the county's Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition (ARD) program. The…

‘Turn Around Don’t Drown’ Bill Passes House

The Bill, introduced by Rep. Todd Stephens, would provide a $250 - $500 for motorists passing police flood barricades.

A bill, sponsored by state Rep. Todd Stephens (R-151) that passed last week, is designed to keep motorists away from storm-flooded areas, according to a Montgomerynews.com article. Stephens has described House Bill 2199, also known as the ‘Turn Around, Don’t Drown” legislation, as “common sense.” The bill would fine motorists $250 - $500 for ignoring police barricades set up to prevent such motorists from entering storm-flooded areas. The fine would be in conjunction with the subsequent rescue, towing or medical care of such motorists, who became stranded in the floodwaters. In addition to the fine, such motorists would also receive two points on their driving record; but does stop short of suspending the motorist’s driver’s license. …

Murt Seeks Families of Late Soldiers

The legislator is trying to coordinate individual memorials for seven area Vietnam war veterans killed in the line of duty.

State Rep. Tom Murt is trying to right injustices dating back more than 40 years. And, he’s seeking the public’s help in doing it. Beginning last year, Murt (R-152), of Upper Moreland, set out to publicly recognize seven servicemen in his district who died in combat during the Vietnam War. For PFC Joseph J. Lannon, Jr., of Hatboro, Murt dedicated the bridge at Horsham and York roads in Lannon’s honor.  For Captain William J. Ahlum, of Upper Moreland, a tree was planted in his honor.  “We’re trying to work with each individual’s family to put together recognition that the family’s comfortable with,” Murt told Patch. “It’s a project that’s long overdue. It’s tragic that none of these men have ever been recognized for their service, for their…

Commissioners Discuss Trash Salvaging in Upper Moreland

While not considered rampant, the Community Development Committee reviewed the township’s policy on individuals taking waste and recyclables for profit.

At the May 14 Community Development Committee, Willow Grove resident Nick Scull described an all-too-familiar scene. According to Scull, after acquiring the proper permits to place his electronic recyclable for the township’s recycling pickup, he had some trouble keeping his recycling on his property. “At four-O’clock I heard some noise and here’s a guy who’s loading my computer into his truck,” Scull recounted before the committee. “And, I’m thinking, I paid 20 bucks for a permit for this, because I don’t want it to end up in a landfill, and I wanted to make sure that it gets recycled properly.” Scull went on to explain to the individual, while he didn’t want to deprive him of his income, Scull also didn’t want his electronic recyclables …

Take Our Poll: 70 mph Speed Limit on Turnpike?

State lawmakers might raise the Pennsylvania Turnpike speed limit to 70 miles per hour. Do you support the move?

State lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow the Turnpike Commission to raise the Pennsylvania Turnpike speed limit to 70 miles per hour. The House Transportation Committee recently approved the measure, which would affect sections of both the Northeast Extension and the rest of the turnpike. Supporters of the measure say the change makes sense because vehicles are safer and the turnpike is wider, flatter and straighter thanks to road improvements. There is no timetable for when - or if  - the bill will come to a vote. Turnpike officials say the speed limit change would not be made without additional study and would apply only to some portions of the road.  Do you think the speed limit should be raised? Vote in our poll and add …
