LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR ACHIEVEMENTS IN NEWS AND TELEVISION PROGRAMS

PHILADELPHIA – On Wednesday, May 14th, the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) presented 11 awards to local high school students who are pursuing a career in media and journalism. Now in its 12th year, the awards are intended to recognize outstanding cultural, educational, technological, entertainment, news and informational achievements by high school students. More than 100 students from high schools throughout the Mid-Atlantic region attended the event held at the Temple University’s Annenberg Hall in Philadelphia.

“We are so excited to recognize all the talented student winners representing high schools throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware,” said Tara Faccenda, Executive Director of NATAS. “This year the Mid-Atlantic chapter received a total of nearly 50 entries in 10 categories from 18 high schools in the Greater Philadelphia region. The awards program provides an opportunity for high schools students to showcase their talent in the field of broadcast journalism.”

Awards were presented to the students by local media professionals. The awards were given to those with achievements in television in 10 categories, including Newscast, News- General Assignment Report, Arts/Cultural Affairs, Music Video, Long Form Fiction, Long Form/Non-Fiction, Sports, Talent, Writing and Public Service – known as the Young Producer’s Award. All entries were received online and judged by both college educators and media professionals from the Mid-Atlantic region.

The Jerry Trently Prize, a $1,000 award given to the high school that wins the Newscast category, was awarded to Plymouth Whitemarsh High School in Plymouth Meeting, Montgomery County. Named in honor of the award-winning, former photojournalist and news director at WHP-TV in Harrisburg, Trently passed away in 2006 after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
