Mamma T brings you Papa T's big helping of chili recipe

This week, my recipe isn’t really mine. I have to give credit where credit is due. This is no dish of Mamma T’s; it is actually Papa T’s.

This is one of my favorite meals that my husband makes for me.  He should get all of the credit.  Thank you Matt Tornetta! I love you very much!

Turkey Chili:

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 Cloves of fresh garlic minced
  • ¼ Cup light olive oil
  • ½ Tsp crushed red pepper
  • 1 15oz can of Bush’s Chili Magic
  • 1 14oz Can of diced tomatoes (jalapeño flavor)
  • 1 16oz of Bush’s Chili Beans In Sauce
  • ½ Can of water (used to rinse the 3 cans above)
  • 1 Large onion chopped
  • 1 Large green pepper – cleaned out and chopped
  • 1 Bag (a small 2 cup bag is PLENTY) Mexican style shredded cheese
  • 1 lb (it’s never sold with exactly 1 lb in the package) ground turkey
  • ½ Tsp crushed red pepper
  • ½ tsp Chili Powder
  • ½ Tsp Sugar
  • ½ Tsp Cumin
  • Cooking Spray
  • Salt & Pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a large pot, add the olive oil, garlic and crushed red pepper. Simmer on low until the garlic starts to turn brown. Remove pot from heat to avoid burning.
  2. In a large frying pan coated with cooking spray, season ground turkey with a dash of chili powder and a dash of cumin and brown. Be sure to break down the turkey while cooking. You will need to stir often.  Smaller pieces are ideal.
  3. Add to the pot the beans, tomatoes, Chili Magic, peppers and onions, salt, pepper, cumin and chili powder. Stir gently so you don’t crush the beans.  Add browned turkey. 
  4. Rinse 3 cans with a half-can of water and add to the pot.  Stir gently and bring to a low boil.  Turn on low and let simmer for 1 hour while stirring often. 
  5. Feel free to add what you want some twists on this recipe, like:  Your favorite hot pepper – ouch! Hot sauce – if you can take it or  sour cream.

Bread is necessary. I suggest you allow a stick of butter to soften so you can spread it easily on the bread. 

This recipe should make about 4 – 5 large bowls. Enjoy!
