Patch Picks

This week's list features Upper Moreland Library staff's favorite picks.

Every Thursday, Patch will run a new weekly feature called "Patch Picks," highlighting editor and reader picks of great local businesses, destinations, services, organizations, ways to spend a day off and more.

You’ll find useful lists to help you, your family, friends, and significant others find the best places for everything, including Sunday brunch, New Year’s Eve celebrations, pumpkin patches, date night destinations, florists, girlfriend nights out, children's party places, parks and more.

This week's list: Upper Moreland Library's Favorite Picks: Programs, services, additions, projects and more

  • Margie Peters, Managing Director

Peters is most excited about the library publishing a professionally printed book of writing and artwork created by local students called "The Carousel" and the creation of a new young adult space in the library specifically for teens.

  • Jim Moran, Children's Librarian

Moran is most excited about TumbleBooks, a subscription for online picture books and educational games for children. Now, with an app for iPhone and iPad, you can have books for your kids on-the-go.

  • Adam Cole, Public Services Librarian

Cole said that his favorite programs are the film series.  The library has
Classic Movie Tuesdays, just like it sounds—classic movies on the second Tuesday of each month—and Sunday Cinema, where the library shows foreign and independent movies on the third Sunday of the month. Cole loves movies, and loves being able to share good cinema with library patrons. Having Dr. Maurizio Giammarco of Temple University at the library for Sunday Cinema gives patrons a chance to discuss the movie with an expert.

  • Julie Watson, Public Services Librarian

Watson likes being able to get downloadable audio books and eBooks from the library—for free!

  • Katie Fitzpatrick, Head of Technical Services

One of Fitzpatrick's favorite services to recommend to patrons is the Learning Express Library. This online test preparation service helps users prepare for tons of exams, from citizenship exams to civil service exams, the GED to the GRE. Whether they need to get a CDL, study for the Praxis II, or just want to brush up on general math skills, Learning Express has something for everyone.

  • Karen Wilton, Circulation Manager

Wilton likes that the library has a great selection of graphic novels and
manga. Lots of people don't know that the library has graphic novel, comic and manga collections in all the age groups: juvenile, young adult and adult.

  • Alex King, Library Assistant

King is proud of the library's newest story times: "Sleepytime Stories with Alex," where parents and children can come visit the library in jammies or with a stuffed animal for stories that help them relax and get ready for bedtime, and "Action Stories," where kids who don't enjoy a traditional story time can enjoy books, songs and play that incorporate lots of activity and movement.

  • Cathy Gilmore, Acting Director

Gilmore's favorite things about the library are new collections that the
library has begun specifically because patrons asked, including rental movies (a second copy of the hottest new releases with no waiting) Book-Club-in-a-Bag kits (with 8 to 12 copies of a book, plus discussion questions), and juvenile and adult video games.
