Future of Former Gas Stations Unknown

Gas pumps have been removed from two shuttered stations on Route 611 in Upper Moreland recently.

Drivers traveling on Easton Road through Upper Moreland likely saw backhoes digging and the subsequent piles of rubble that once were gas pumps at two former gas stations.

The shuttered stations, which are situated across the street from one another on Route 611 in the area of Sycamore Avenue will have a new life.

But, what and when that will be is up in the air, according to Robert Nicoletti of Philadelphia Suburban Development Corporation, the entity improving the pair of 30,000-square-foot parcels in preparation for leasing them out.

"We have one tenant already," Nicoletti told Patch. "We can’t say (who) because there is no agreement yet."

Nicoletti said the prospective leasee is a "major national tenant" representing the type of business "the neighborhood would appreciate."

Gas tank removal and cleanup will continue for another two to three weeks, he said. After that, the properties would be marketed. The sites would be home to "some other type of tenant," Nicoletti said, adding that the parcels are "not even allowed to be a gas station for another 10 years."

Red and white signs posted onsite along the heavily traveled roadway are already generating attention, Nicoletti said.

"We have calls from many people," he said. "There is a lot of interest."

Upper Moreland Township Manager David Dodies said the township has not yet received an application for development.

"Owner’s plans for future use unknown at present," Dodies wrote in an e-mail.
