EASTERN Office Management Student Starts Job Shadowing at Abington Memorial Hospital

Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) Office Management/Abington High School senior, Leah Brown, is currently participating in a job shadowing program at EASTERN and at Abington Memorial Hospital as part of her career and technical program at EASTERN.

Office Management began the job-shadowing program as a way for students to gain real-world experience in many business-related fields, such as: marketing, public relations, accounting, and medical coding and billing.  On March 11, 2014, Leah began her first job shadowing as a volunteer on Tuesdays in Abington Memorial Hospital’s Employee Health Department.

In the fall, Leah started her Office Management program at EASTERN. She chose this program because she knew that it would be a stepping stone to improving her communication skills - especially since she will be a communications major this coming fall. She will be well-versed in programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.

“Before starting the Office Management program, I was in Allied Health - but I quickly realized that it was not the right program for me,” said Leah.  “So I decided to change my major and my program. I chose this program because I am very interested in working with computers and learning new applications. I have also learned how to present myself in a business environment and to communicate better with others.”

She is grateful for the internship opportunity at Abington Memorial Hospital and for the experience of working and learning from experts who have been in the office management field for many years. She continues to work on improving her communication skills through this program.

After Leah graduates from EASTERN and Abington High School this coming June, she plans to continue her education in Telecommunications at Lock Haven University. Ultimately, Leah would like to work as a TV Broadcaster or Radio Talk Show Host.

EASTERN’s Office Management Program students benefit from a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience needed to work with computers and computer applications. Students also learn the professionalism that is necessary to succeed in an office environment.
