School Board Adopts Budget with Tax Hike

Upper Moreland School District property owners can expect to pay about $60 more in real estate taxes under the district's $56.9 million budget, which the school board adopted Tuesday night.

Under the spending plan, which came in about $20 less than previously projected for the average taxpayer, the district's millage rate will rise by 1.68 percent 27.68 mills. At that rate, the owner of a home assessed at the township average of $127,470 would pay $58.19 more in school district-derived real estate taxes.

The budget includes a $5 million bond to cover infrastructure improvements at Upper Moreland Middle School.

Administrator pay increases, also approved Tuesday night, are also figured into the budget, officials said.

Superintendent Robert Milrod, during his report, lauded the board for its "fiscal responsibility."

"You are a pro-education board," Milrod said.

Milrod added that the budget, which came in under the state's 1.7 percent Act 1 index, was finalized with "no significant cuts to programs" and without teacher furloughs.

"There's no one walking out the door," Milrod said.

Taxpayers who qualify for the state's Homestead Exclusion will see a $211 reduction in property taxes.
