Flash Floods Hit Upper Moreland

A line of storms caused serious flash flooding around Upper Moreland and WIllow Grove Friday night.

Police, firefighters and EMTs kept busy Friday night as heavy storms brought severe flash flooding to Upper Moreland Township. 

Police report in the township there were at least a dozen calls of people who had to be rescued from their vehicles after they were trapped by rising waters.

One such rescue took place on Bonnet Lane. Bruce Mann, who was helping his sons push the family car out of the flood waters, watched as a silver Nissian went right into the water and got stuck.

Minutes later fire responders were in the water rescuing the driver and a passenger. Police said, the two were shaken and wet but did not suffer any serious injuries.

Chief Lee Perlmutter said his department handled more than 20 calls, including a building struck by lightning, multiple electrical fires and many water rescues.

Almost every major road in the township was shut down due to flash flooding, police said.

At one point Upper Moreland Township was cut in two by flooding. Crews from the Market Place Station were was assisted by fire crews from Hatboro and Warminster, Perlmutter told Patch.

Witnesses reported, shoppers frantically moved their cars out of the parking lot of the Willow Grove Shopping Center as flood waters rose Friday night.

Perlmutter said his department has members that are specialy trained to handle water rescues and they were very busy Friday.

The chief also thanked the department's Fire Police who assisted with traffic control and kept residents safe.

"If it looks like you can't go through the standing water - DON'T," Perlmutter warned motorist.
