Attempted jewelry theft

  • On Saturady, April, 23, at approximately 1 p.m., the employees at Jared Jewelers in Willow Grove became suspicious of a customer. Jared Jewelry stores in the region have been suffering from high-end snatch-and-grab incidents. A customer was asking to see the most expensive rings that are sold at the store while acting suspiciously. That customer fit the description of a snatch-and-grab suspect from an incident the previous day in King of Prussia. The employees immediately called 911, and the Upper Moreland police mobilized with undercover personnel. When the employee was unwilling to allow the suspicious customer to hold a very expensive ring, the customer left the store. The undercover officers followed him with the intent of conducting an investigatory stop. The suspect jumped into a waiting minivan and fled from the officers. As other officers converged on the fleeing vehicle, the occupants abandoned the minivan and fled on foot into the Marshall’s store. One suspect was caught in the store, and the other ran through the store using an emergency fire door to exit the rear. He was apprehended on Davisville Road by Abington Township police officers.

The suspects are residents of the state of Michigan, and the vehicle had been stolen earlier in the day from the Willow Grove Mall. The males are suspects in previous Jared Jewelry thefts, and the investigation is continuing.

The first suspect is reported to be Eric Christopher Williams, 20, of Oak Park, MI, and the second suspect is Lawrence Saffold, 23, of Detroit, MI.
