New Pedestrian Signals May Be Coming to Willow Grove

The Upper Moreland commissioners consider applying for a grant to install new pedestrian signals and a crosswalk.

Upper Moreland Commissioners are seeking a grant to install two new pedestrian signals on the opposite side of York Road between Easton Road and the railroad tracks.

Commissioners stated they want to acquire funds through Montgomery County for the Community Development Block Grant program that will hopefully come through in 2014.

The project would include installing a decorative crosswalk, adding two new pedestrian signals that would have countdown timers, and push-buttons with black poles. They are hoping to replicate all the work that’s already been completed on the opposite of York Road.

Upper Moreland Township Engineer Eric Garten told commissioners that if the grant is approved, the county will fund the majority of the project that is expected to cost $256,950. The township would only be responsible engineering, design and professional fees.

Upper Moreland Township manager David Dodies said the county typically doesn’t approve grants over $200,000, but said there is a good chance it happens because “streetscaping is something they give a priority to.”

“It’s a very unsafe situation that we need to rectify,” Commissioner Lisa Romaniello said . “Between the sidewalks that have been deteriorated, they aren’t even, this is really just completing that lot.”
