Put Down the Phone, It's Distracted Driving Awareness Month in MontCo

The county commissioners have declared April 2014 Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Hang up and drive. 

That's the message from Montgomery County officials and they've created an awareness month to get the word out.

The county commissioners have declared April 2014 Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The measure was approved by proclamation during the commissioners’ Thursday meeting.

The proclamation says texting while driving is a “serious, life-threatening practice.” 

“In order to reduce the number of crashes, as well as to improve driver safety, motorists should dedicate themselves to adopting and maintaining safe behavior while behind the wheel,” the proclamation said.

The proclamation says the health and well-being of Montgomery County residents is a “direct result of increased awareness about the dangers of distracted driving.”

According to data from the county, one million crashes per year can be attributed to distracted driving, including talking on cell phones and texting while driving.

In Montgomery County, 235 citations for texting and driving have been issued since the No Texting and Driving law was enacted in 2012.
