Township Votes to Share Half of ‘Field of Dreams’ Fees

Upper Moreland Township commissioners voted against waiving all fees associated with the Field of Dreams project, in lieu of paying for half the waivers.

The Upper Moreland Board of Commissioners voted to offer to pay for half of fees associated with construction inspections of the “” project in a vote of 6-1.

The vote took place at the July 2 regular board meeting of commissioners.

Prior to this vote, the commissioners considered a motion for a request by Upper Moreland School District to waive all fees related to the inspection of the construction of the Field of Dreams. The fees amounted to $710 worth of engineering inspections.

This motion was defeated in a count of 5-2, and was immediately followed by the motion for the township to pay for half of the waivers, made by Ward 2 commissioner Kevin Spearing.

“There is value for the township with this field,” Spearing said, explaining that the new sports field would free up sports field usage for both township and the school district usage, such as at Masons Mill Park. “I do believe it is a shared benefit, which is why I want to share the costs.”

The Field of Dreams project aims to create a new baseball field, primarily to be the home field of the Upper Moreland High School baseball team. It can also be used by soccer and lacrosse players. The project was started and mostly paid for by private community members. The field has an estimated cost between $75,000 and $100,000, and may be operational in September.
