Upper Moreland Seeks Stormwater Funds

The township has applied for two grants, which, if received, would help mitigate stormater issues in Upper Moreland.

Flooding and stormwater management help could be trickling down to Upper Moreland Township.

The Upper Moreland Commissioners, earlier this month, approved resolutions to submit two separate grants to the state seeking funds to install a water retention area at the six-acre Fair Oaks Park, 2300 Skrobul Road; and continue with stream bank improvements at Veterans Memorial Park, 220 Mineral Ave.

The stormwater management work planned for Veterans Memorial Park is "consistent with best management processes in terms of stormwater runoff," Dodies said. In addition, it would prevent further erosion, he said.

If the grants are received–$438,500 for Fair Oaks Park and $188,000 for Veterans Memorial Park–the township would be responsible for a 15 percent match, according to Township Manager David Dodies. Matching funds could come in the form of professional services for engineering of the project, for example, or actual money to help pay for it, Dodies said.

The township expects to hear by year's end if the grants will be awarded, according to Dodies.

The grant submissions resulted from a report issued earlier this year by a subcommittee of commissioners. The group convened two years ago to study stormwater management and related issues, Dodies said.

"The report identified stormwater management issues throughout the township and assigned priorities using the report as a basis," he said.
