2011-2012 UMSD Disney Trip Pushed Back Closer to the End of the School Year

Next year's Disney trip is expected to feature a private luau at Sea World.

The Upper Moreland School District Programs and Services committee has moved the date of next year's Disney trip forward for the consideration of the full school board.

The Disney trip is an annual, long-standing tradition for the district’s high school students where they visit Disney World. Although the students pay for the trip, the trip is conducted through the district. Students may miss class time as result of attending the trip.

According to the district’s director of education, Jenny Lehman, the 2011-2012 trip is scheduled for May 19 to 22. This school year, the trip took place from April 19 to 22.

Lehman said that pushing the trip closer to the end of the year would enable students to take necessary standardized testing before they go on the trip.

The week following next year’s trip, students are scheduled to have final exams.

She noted that there has been a $40 increase to next year’s trip, which will include a luau held at Sea World.

A minority of the board members present at the Aug. 2 committee meeting expressed disdain for the trip, and vowed not to vote for it, saying, among other reasons, that the trip takes away valuable class time from the students.

Also from the Aug. 2 Programs and Services committee meeting, the school calendar has been changed to accommodate teacher in-service dates, and teacher and student holidays. The proposed last day for students to attend school is June 7, 2012, with graduation set for June 6, 2012.
