Eastern Alumnus Spotlight: George Beech

Beech, a Computer Network Administration alumnus of Eastern Center for Arts and Technology, currently works for the New York City-based start up Stack Exchange.

Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) 2001 Computer Network Administration/Jenkintown High School graduate, George Beech, is currently running the server and network infrastructure for a start up in New York City called Stack Exchange.

Stack Exchange, serving more than 20-million visitors per month, is a fast-growing network of 63 question and answer sites on diverse topics from software programming to cooking to photography and gaming.

They are an expert knowledge exchange: a place where physics researchers can ask each other about quantum entanglement, computer programmers can ask about JavaScript date formats, and photographers can share knowledge about taking great pictures in the snow.

Beech has been interested in working for a start-up since his desire to work in the computer field first began while in high school.

He knew that he did not want to move away from his family and friends on the east coast, which most start-ups required. The opportunity with Stack Exchange brought Beech to New York where he has worked for the past year, and lived for the past six months.

After graduation from EASTERN and Jenkintown High School, Beech stayed at EASTERN and worked as an intern for the Technology Management Systems department for two years while pursuing his Associate’s degree in Computer Information Science at Montgomery County Community College (MCCC).

Through his Computer Network Administration program at EASTERN, he started at MCCC with roughly 13 credits already earned toward his degree. After MCCC, Beech matriculated to Arcadia University and received his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Technology.

Soon after graduation from Arcadia, Beech started working for the largest call center in the world creating and troubleshooting automated voice systems which handled several million calls per month.

“People often hold a misconception about career and technical high schools,” said Beech. “If you are interested in a career in the computer field, EASTERN is a great place to start. The skills and knowledge I received from EASTERN have been invaluable throughout the college life and my career. I probably wouldn’t be where I am today in my career without the head start I received at EASTERN.”

EASTERN’s Computer Network Administration is a two-year half-day program for high school juniors and seniors in which students must pass the Certified Linux Administrator (CLA) exam in the first year and are prepared for two other industry certification exams: Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) and Novell Certified Administrator (NCA). First-year seniors are welcome providing there is room in the class.
