Leo Club Gives to Second Alarmers

Upper Moreland Middle School students in the Leo Club help SARS purchase life-saving pet oxygen masks.

Second Alarmers Rescue Squad (SARS) will be receiving the donation of lifesaving pet oxygen masks from the children of Upper Moreland Middle Schools Leo Club.

The masks will be the first of their kind for SARS and were 100 percent fundraised by the children. The masks were presented to SARS at Upper Moreland Middle School on Thursday, May 19, at 8:52 a.m. at the last all-school assembly of the year.

According to Jamie Haddon, executive director of SARS, the group of children have been fundraising all year to provide the lifesaving items.

“Second Alarmers often gets called out to scenes of emergencies and have to improvise when helping out family pets," Haddon said. "We are grateful for this donation that will go a long way in addressing a long overdue need.”

SARS responds to nearly 13,000 emergency calls a year to provide crucial life saving emergency medical and rescue services to the residents and visitors of Abington, Upper Dublin, Upper Moreland and Whitpain townships, as well as the boroughs of Hatboro, Jenkintown, Rockledge, and their surrounding communities.

Leo Clubs are a youth organization of Lions Clubs International. The word "Leo" stands for Leadership, Experience, Opportunity. According to a recent release, the Leo Club objective is "to provide the youth of the world (with) an opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community."

Leo Clubs encourage youths to develop leadership qualities by participating in social service activities. They are dependent on a Lions Club to sponsor and initiate a Leo Club. The clubs conduct various projects for elders, children, the differently abled, literacy and education, and self-development. Leo Clubs are are an official program of the Lions Club.
