Settlement Music School to hold Open House

Settlement Music School’s Annual Open House — where folks get to try out instruments; talk to teachers about specific instruction and participate in demonstrations — will happen again this year on Saturday, June 9, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., but with a few new twists.

New adult classes such as “Inside the Symphony” will be featured along with “Album Rock for the Guitar” for those rock star wannabes who let life and career get in the way of learning music.

Unique summer camps will also be showcased, like Germantown’s Egungun Festival, where students ages 8-13 make masks and learn to drum and dance like it was done hundreds of years ago in ancient West African and Brazilian cultures.

The Open Houses will feature numerous student and faculty music and dance performances, workshops, demonstrations, award winning programs for pre-schoolers and those for students with disabilities. 

There will be a “Cello-bration” at the Willow Grove branch with music performed on many types and sizes of cellos. Even a woodwind repair session will take place at the Kardon-Northeast branch from 10 am to noon. Visit www.smsmusic.org for specific branch information.
