The Sports' Week in Review: Boys' Soccer Looking to Get Back on Track

UMHS boy's soccer team is still looking to get a win streak going, as the girls' soccer squad won big this week.

The Upper Moreland High School boys’ soccer team still hasn’t recorded a win this season. The defending league champs have had trouble hitting the field due to the weather, but now is the time the team needs to get a few wins to start a key run.

In recent action against Plymouth Whitemarsh, the Bears lost in overtime 2-1. It was last second drama as some players thought the ball didn’t go in, but either way, Upper Moreland needs to start winning games, fast.

“The guys said it didn’t go in, but there is noting you can do,” said head coach Jack Knauss after the game. “We played hard. This is what our boys have to learn. Just because you win everything last year doesn’t mean everything is going to be handed to you this year.”

Last season, the team finished with a 15-3-1 overall record en route to a state championship birth. You can tell already that it will be tough for the bears to regain championship status.

“We are nowhere near as close as we were last year,” said Knauss. “You can’t like what you see when you start off with two losses. You are never going to be happy until you get some wins on your back. We have to get this monkey off our back.”

Keeping their heads up will be key during a tough stretch that Upper Moreland never had to face last season.

“We have to try and keep our heads up,” said senior Carl Wambold. “They are def targeting for us. Every team is trying to come after us this year.

This year, Upper Moreland simply won’t slip under the radar, which is what has made the road so difficult so far.

“Last year we surprised teams, but now everyone knows us,” said senior Tommy Hays. “You just have to take it one game at a time and get back on the right track. We are getting better, but we have a whole new midfield this year. We just have to keep working hard and hopefully good things will happen.”

Upper Moreland couldn’t overcome being down two goals by halftime against Wissahickon and fell 3-1 on Thursday.

The team will be host to Upper Dublin on Monday afternoon. It will be a tough task for Upper Moreland as the Cardinals have shut out three opponents this year and have scored five or more goals twice this season against two teams.

Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
