Whiz Kid: Austin Sgro

Sgro will certainly keep himself busy during his senior year at Upper Moreland High School.

Austin Sgro doesn’t like sitting on the sidelines.

The Upper Moreland High School student is taking advantage of his opportunity to get involved by keeping busy with a host of activities.

“I hate watching,” said Sgro. “I’m not a watcher. I’m more of a doer.  If I hear about something, I definitely hop in and give a hand, and not sit and watch.”

Sgro can never be accused of sitting and watching. As Sgro prepares for his senior year, he has another busy schedule on the horizon.

Last year, Sgro was a member of the National Honor Society, and he earned a spot on the school’s Distinguished Honor Roll. He will serve as the National Honor Society vice-president this coming year. Sgro will also serve as co-president of the Key Club, and president of the Ski Club and Film Club. Sgro also works with Interact Club.

“I just kind of go with the flow whenever something pops up,” Sgro said.  “If I hear of an event in the future, I’ll mark it down. When it comes, I’ll be there for sure. I’m more of a just go-with-the-flow type of person.”

Sgro is also active in athletics at Upper Moreland. Last year, he played golf, basketball and lacrosse. Sgro will play all three sports again this year, and will be a co-captain for golf and lacrosse.

Sgro credits sports as a major reason he has developed a take charge personality, which does not go unrecognized by his classmates.

“Sports are definitely having a huge impact on my life,” said Sgro. “I wouldn’t be the same person if I wasn’t involved in so many sports. I think that’s where the leadership comes from.”

When Sgro isn’t excelling in the classroom or with his wide range of extracurricular activities, he is busy giving back to the community. He is a JRA and Impact Thrift Store volunteer. Sgro also participated in the American Cancer Society’s 5K walk/run, along with an an all-night volleyball fundraiser.

One of Sgro’s favorite events is the Red Cross Blood Drive. Each year, Sgro gives the gift of life by donating blood.

“I really like doing that because I know I’m helping others,” Sgro said.  “I’m pretty much saving lives by donating blood. I do it every year.”

Great leaders excel because they listen as well as they lead. Sgro is always working with his classmates to do what is best for the student body at Upper Moreland.

“I talk to a lot of people,” said Sgro. "I know almost everybody who has been in my grade since grade school. I hear their ideas, and I tell other people their ideas. We work with them, [and] I try to get things accomplished. By not being afraid to speak up, we get a lot done.”

Sgro has several college options once his days at Upper Moreland come to a close. He still has yet to select a career path, but Sgro’s wide variety of activities has opened up a host of possibilities.

“I think I’m going to major in business marketing with a minor in communications,” Sgro said. “I’ve looked at Penn State and Delaware, and I’ve also visited St. Joe’s.  I want to check out West Virginia, as well.”

No matter what Sgro decides to do with his life, he seems destined for success. He also seems destined to have a host of people behind him throughout his future.

“I just know I’m very comfortable with talking to people,” said Sgro.  “Every day, I can do something different.”
