Baseball Coach Named Best of Year

Upper Moreland High School's varsity baseball coach Ernie Rehr credits team with his coach of the year honor.

Ernie Rehr took the Golden Bears to bat in the high school’s first-ever appearance in the PIAA state baseball championship game.

The baseball team, which finished the season 21-5, had the best overall record in Rehr’s six years coaching the team.

Still, when his father, after reading an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer congratulated him on being coach of the year, a surprised Rehr said he didn’t know what to say.

“There’s a lot of incredible coaches in the area,” Rehr told Patch. “I’m extremely humble even my name being mentioned.”

The ever-modest Rehr credits the “talent,” i.e. his players, as well as assistant coach Ken Irwin, with a great last season and projections for an even more successful next season.

Rehr, who’s been coaching for a total of 11 years and is also a social studies teacher at Upper Moreland High School, said he’s looking to return a “fair amount” of starters next season and all but one of the team's pitchers.

“I feel like our confidence is high,” Rehr said of the defending Suburban One American Conference Champions. “Upper Moreland is an excellent baseball district and we can compete with just about anyone that’s on our level.”

But, more important than the competition is for players to “enjoy the ride.”

“It happens too quickly. Have fun,” Rehr said of what he has learned. “It was just a blast to go to Penn State. There’s memories there that will just never go away.”
