Amelia Earhart Flew Over The Skies of Upper Moreland

Amelia Earhart, the first woman to make a Transatlantic flight and the first woman to fly across the Pacific, once tested an autogiro over the skies of Upper Moreland.

She flew from Pitcairn Field, the airport of Harold F. Pitcairn of Byrn Athyn. Pitcairn had purchased the U.S. rights to copy the airogiro design from inventor, Juan de la Cierva and built his own plane.

Earhart also spent time in the area when she attended the The Ogontz School for Girls in Abington, which is now the site of the Pennsylvania State University Ogontz Campus.
