Little Free Libraries Serve Communities

Little Free Libraries are libraries set in the front yards of book lovers. They operate under the "take a book, leave a book" rule and are especially treasured in rural areas where township libraries are sparse.

According to the Little Free Library website, the idea started in 2009 with Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin. He built a model of a one-room schoolhouse as a tribute to his mother, who was a school teacher. He filled it with books and put it on a post in his front yard. His friends and neighbors liked it so he built more and gave them away. Each had a sign that said Free Books.

I haven't seen one of these libraries in person and if you haven't, here is a map of them provided by the Little Free Library website.

Now, for something completely different, here are pictures of some of the world's largest, most ornate libraries. Included are ones from Portugal, Italy, Austria, Baltimore, Maryland and others.
