America Responds With Love Debuts Free Book Program

Greater Willow Grove residents will have their choice of 100 children and youth books to take home, for free.

America Responds With Love, a national nonprofit organization, wants to encourage education this summer by providing 100 books to children and youth in the Greater Willow Grove and Horsham areas.

[Updated July 3] The free book give away will start June 29, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at , located in Horsham. The event is the first of its kind for the charitable organization’s Respond With Love Education Program.

The book-give away will continue through the week of July 2, during the bank's hours.

“America Responds With Love strives to help individuals, families and communities that may be overlooked by others,” Richard McDonough,  America Responds With Love president and CEO, said in a press release. "We believe it’s important to provide books to children and young people so that education can continue through the summer months.”

America Responds With Love holds its main headquarters in Valley Forge, but is based in Wichita, KS. The organization started with providing housing for families in need, and has since branched out to a diverse group of services, including municipal beautification programs, veterans care and natural disaster relief throughout the country.

Most recently in the Eastern Montgomery County area, America Responds With Love held a in Novemeber at Colonial American bank, where the book give away event will again take place.

"We are pleased to support these efforts to encourage summer reading among children and young people,” Kevin Gehring, vice president and Colonial American Bank office manager, said in the release. "Colonial American Bank is proud to support these efforts to help further educational efforts in our community."

The event will feature a variety of books for youth in elementary school through high school. Participants of the event will be able to purse the selections, and take away a book on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Book topics will include, but are not limited to:

  • Picture books
  • Books that teach leadership skills
  • Sports
  • Music
  • Arts
  • History
  • Geography
  • Economics

According to McDonough, America Responds With Love has collected over 80,000 books over the years, some of which were from local Montgomery County book stores.

McDonough said this book giveaway is another strategy of the nonprofit to encourage education within youth. In the past, America Responds With Love has also donated books to Norristown’s Police Athletic League library and the Arthur Ashe Tennis Youth Center library in Philadelphia.

McDonough said that he is hopeful other businesses like Colonial American Bank will also come forward to sponsor a book give away event, so that the Respond With Love Education Program may continue to serve communities.
