Lions Club Brings Back 'Cool Cars in the School Yard'

The 32nd-annual Lions Club of Willow Grove car show will take place June 9.

“Cool Cars in the School Yard” will make its 32nd appearance on June 9, featuring the best in the local car culture.

The Lions Club of Willow Grove-sponsored event will take place from 4 – 7:30 p.m. at the Intermediate and Primary schools’ paring lot, located in Hatboro, and promises is sure to please every kind of car enthusiast.

“Come and see custom vehicles with dazzling paint, shining like liquid glass, set against chrome everywhere under the hood – even on underbody components,” Don Shields told Patch in a correspondence. “Every vehicle has a history and an owner only too eager to share it. You’ll come away with a new respect for their efforts, and a treasure trove of fascinating stories.”

Shields,  co-chair of the “Cool Cars in the School Yard” auto show, said that each year car enthusiasts come from in and around the Greater Upper Moreland area to showcase their vehicles in the show. He said that owners work all year to restore their vehicles to showroom-new conditions, trying to capture the look and feel of when their cars first rolled off the factory line.

He said that the show drives nostalgia for both owners and visitors, inviting them to, “Travel back in time, and imagine what driving was like in those days.”

The vehicles  will be judged in various categories throughout the event:

  • Awards for Top 5 Motorcycles by popular vote
  • Awards for Top 50 Cars and Trucks by popular vote
  • Best of Show Awards for Motorcycles, Stock Cars, and Custom Cars selected by Lions Club Committee

According to Shields, a new award will be given this year, called the Don Magee Memorial Award, in honor of the longtime Lions Club of Willow Grove member. Shields said that Magee, who lost his battle to cancer in December 2010, was noted for his warm, engaging personality, as well as the meticulously restored stock-condition cars.

“We Lions are proud to institute this trophy in his honor,” Shields said.

Also featured at the event will be:

  • Entertainer “Elvis Pretzel”
  • Meet and greets with Miss America Pageant local titleholders
  • Barbecue and other refreshments for sale.

“All the above is why we’d like to see people coming out to our show,” Shields said.
