Yard Sale for Cummins Family Raises Over $7,500

In a span of four hours, the Hatboro-area community came out in droves Saturday to help support a fundraising yard sale that benefited a family whose house was lost in a fire last week.

Although it typically takes weeks of planning to promote and produce a multi-home yard sale, organizers of the "Caring for Cummins" family yard sale did it in less than four days.

Equally as impressive, hundreds of community members and well-wishers came out to the event in support of the Cummins family, who lost their home in a fire last week.

Donations from both event volunteers and from the general public were sold at the yard sale. Instead of fixing a price to the items, yard sale participants were simply asked to name their price in light of the cause.

“We just feel, because it is for charity and not for personal gain, we would just ask people to give whatever they can afford to support a family that’s lost their home,” LouAnn Geiselhart, a yard sale volunteer, said.

In that way, and through other donations of gift cards, cash and checks, the yard sale was able to raise over $7,500—all of which were presented to the Cummins family yesterday.

For many of the event volunteers and participants, the quick action response throughout the whole community, leaves a feeling of friendship and confidence of their fellow neighbors.

“I know the Cummins family just by saying hello in the community,” Burt Ludin, Willow Grove resident, said. He added that this is the type of community where people would give greetings, whether they knew you or not. “Talking to people over breakfast, people are still shook up, over what they heard and experienced. “

“I think it also helps that Upper Moreland Township is a small enough community where word gets out, people pull together to help when someone is down,” James McGhee, who participated in the yard sale with his wife, Valerie, said.
