Shouldn't they fix the high school first? It leaks like a sieve when it rains. There is no…Read More ventilation. The heat and air conditioning don't work. Now they are going to throw more money away and make the middle school worse by hiring low bid contractors that can do what they want because no one is over seeing or caring about the job. As long as it looks shiny and new they are happy. Not one person in charge is using an ounce of common sense.

Per the above comment, more focus should be on the resolution of issues at the high school with the…Read More individual contractors involved. A huge amount of taxpayer funds were spent on the hideous additions and refurbishments. It's no wonder our school taxes increase every year, when the Commissioner's neglect to rein in spending. $70 million is an enormous dept to be incurred by the residents of UM.

Hmm - other districts are completely cutting their arts programs. UM is rich in the arts, even with…Read More part time teachers and a budget which can be strained. Isn't part time better than no time? Perhaps Ms. Nuss should realize the budget controls ALL the programs of the district (and her salary) and gratitude would be a more positive role to play instead of placing blame and finger pointing. It might be time to think outside of the box to continue to deliver the programs you are passionate about. Be part of the solution - not the problem.

MoW my lawn. "Upper Moreland is rich in the arts" REALLY? They used to value their music…Read More program and art program, but not anymore. As SOF said, they only value core curriculum classes. They only care about the ones that bring them money through PSSA testing. Get your head out of your butt and take a good hard look at what's happening. They are sliding down a slippery slope of no return and the future generations will pay the price. It's terribly sad. By the way, you say Ms Nuss finger pointed and placed blame- no cupcake, that's what you just did. Shame on you.

EWidmayer- just curious to know what the difference is in the music and the arts program today then…Read More when you are referring too? And what decade are you referring too? I am not a district employee talking ill of my employer, I find that troubling which was my point. No finger pointing.

Standards certainly have lowered since I was in college. 2.75 average gets you into a "Who's…Read More Who"? Maybe we should aim a little higher, folks. But we're becoming a sub-standard country so I guess this should be no surprise.

Actually, nominated students excel in many areas! If the criteria included only the GPA, there would…Read More be thousands of recipients, not 62. Above average students participate in all college committees, student government, sports, PBL, and may be members of PTK for those who have received honors status. Some speak to legislators to appeal for funding for college students, while others join volunteer community activities to support Philabundance and/or Manna on Main Street. A number of students travel out of state to volunteer for Habitat for Humanitiy initiatives including home reconstruction. Perhaps the article should have included additional information to inform readers. I hope this clarifies your concerns.

Love the internet for how easy it is to "rain on parades". I commend these students for…Read More their hard work! The article makes it clear that the students are nominated by their professors. This is NOT an "honor roll" where you only have to score a certain GPA. This is a recognition that includes getting a professor to take the time to fill out paperwork and go the extra mile, because they think the student deserves kudos for their effort. I would rather hire a C+ student who has volunteered, led activities, played on a team, sang in a choir, etc. than someone with an A average who has not taken the time to get involved.

There was an email sent around earlier today from the school that the dinner was sold out.…Read More
"Thanks to all of the Middle School families who have supported the students going to Canada. All available tickets for the Italian Festa and Wawa coupons have sold out"

Hi Gina and Nora - Thanks very much for the update - Glad to hear that the event is a success before…Read More it even started - I'll make sure to note that it's sold out on UM Patch Facebook, as well.

The address for Queen of Angela school is listed incorrectly in the last line of the article. The…Read More correct address is 401 North East on Road Willow Grove.

So this is what they do with the obscenely high taxes they gouge out of me every year. Nice to know…Read More what other peoples' kids will have done for them. Personally I don't have any kids so it doesn't apply to me personally, unless you count the astronomical amount of money leached from me every September for these sort of shool-related "improvements" by the UM tax barons.
Moureen Wenik April 13, 2013 at 11:22 am
Cinderabi, perhaps they should nothing at all and then have to build a new school. It sounds like…Read More you woke up grumpy.

I'd rather see them finish the high school first. The air conditioning is still not working. The…Read More rooms were upward to 90 degrees last week and it wasn't even that hot yet. I hate to see them keep dumping money into the schools if they aren't going to make sure they aren't leaking, that the heat and air work and that the air is safe to breath (mold). Does the school board know that the air conditioning doesn't work in the high school? Do they know that the windows can only be opened inches (most rooms only have 2) and there is no ventilation or chance of even having cooler air come in? Do they care? Does anyone? Since this "project" was "finished" it has never been solved. Now they plan on wasting more money by hiring incompetent people to do below par work that no one will oversee or care if it's done correctly. This school district is run just like our government- wastefully and poorly.

I do have a question. Are they going to charge their laptops at school? Batteries only last so…Read More long. Is this still a cost saving plan if they are plugging in their equipment and charging it at school? If you think about it, say only half the students bring in their own laptops, and then say only half of them charge their laptops at school. That would be approximately 7 students per classroom, and they have probably about 45 classrooms...that is a sizable amount of electricity being used. I wonder if that was figured into this plan. Or if there is even enough outlets in the classrooms to plug in? I wonder if Lower Moreland's electric bill took a jump?

What about school liability with regard to any theft or damage of these devices? As we all know,…Read More expensive laptops and smart phones will walk. Extension cords for classroom charging operation will produce safety/tripping hazard. Many of the students may only have desktops at home, thus parents would be pressured into the purchase of an expensive laptop for their student.
