Former detective accused of coercing others to buy drugs for him
A Horsham man and former Hatboro detective was arraigned today on charges that he used police department informants to make drug purchases on his behalf. John Becker, 42, is alleged to have stolen valuables from the police department’s evidence room, including firearms, cash and drugs. Additionally, Becker is accused of engaging in a series of thefts from the evidence room of the Hatboro Police Department, where he served for many years as the evidence custodian. Between 2003 and 2011, Becker allegedly stole 10 firearms, including a rare German 9mm Luger pistol, along with numerous other handguns and a 12-gauge shotgun, according to authorities. A second preliminary hearing for the remaining suspects is set for May 24 before District Judge Andrea Duffy
At the District Court of Judge Andrea Duffy Wednesday morning, 12 of the 32 suspects arrested May 8 in connection with a large-scale methamphetamine trafficking ring waived all charges against them to a July 5 arraignment in the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas. Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Jason Whalley said a preliminary hearing will be held May 24 at 10:45 a.m. for the remaining 20 suspects, including what he called the "big players": Francesco "Frank" Messina, Dave Penna and Jeff Penna. DUI Sloane Miller of Willow Grove was arrested on May 2for Driving under the Influence of Alcohol. Assault Shawn Moyer of Willow Grove was arrested on May 4 for Simple Assault. Mariusz Plewa, of Philadelphia, PA, was arrested for Simple Assault, Harassment, Reckless Endangering Another Person, and Theft by Unlawful Taking on April 25. Harassment Andrew McNeishie, of Upper Darby, PA, was arrested for Harassment, Stalking, and Terroristic Threats on April 29.
The Philadelphia man who purchased thousands of dollars worth of stolen items from two men who allegedly committed burglaries in Abington and neighboring areas, was sentenced yesterday.

According to the Times Herald, Robert Snyder, 73, of Fillmore Street, Philadelphia, was sentenced this week in Montgomery County Court to 10 years’ probation after he pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit receiving stolen property, receiving stolen property in connection. He ran the now-defunct Lawndale Coin and Collectibles on Rising Sun Avenue in Philadelphia. At sentencing, Snyder paid $250,000 in restitution. According to the story, the burglaries took place in Abington, Cheltenham, Lower Moreland, Upper Moreland, Upper Dublin and Montgomery townships; there were also burglaries in Bucks and Philadelphia counties. The puppies were found by Upper Moreland Police around Lakevue Drive and Mansfield Road in Willow Grove.
[Updated 5:20 p.m., 5-10-12] According to Upper Moreland Police Chief Thomas Nestel, no one came forward to claim the lost puppies, reported yesterday. Nestel, in a correspondence, said that the puppies were taken to a local shelter for further care. "Sadly, the puppies were not claimed which makes it seem that this is an abandonment and not an escape," Nestel said. "They were taken to the Roslyn SPCA where they will be cared for and presumably put up for adoption." Markley Charles, 24, of E. Dorset Street in Philadelphia was charged with raping a passed out 15-year-old girl during a party held in a vacant apartment, according to a Phillyburbs.com article. The report states that the incident took place on Feb. 26, when Upper Moreland Police found the girl with her pants and underwear inside out in a Blair Mill Village East vacant apartment, still unconscious and extremely intoxicated. Charles was charged with rape, numerous sex offenses and providing alcohol to a minor. Charles’ brother and an 18-year-old Hatboro woman have also been charged in connection with the party. A total of 32 suspects were arrested in connection with a methamphetamine distribution network which spanned from northern Montgomery County to Philadelphia.
Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman has announced the arrest of 32 suspects in connection with a large-scale methamphetamine trafficking operation, which spanned from northern Montgomery County to Philadelphia and included 12 residents of Lansdale Borough and Hatfield, Towamencin, Montgomery and Upper Gwynedd townships. Methamphetamine was recovered from a motorcycle repair shop in Lansdale, according to the report, just one of many locations where police executed a search warrant. One of those arrested in charged with drug violations include Ronald Krauss, owner of Bad Ronald's Custom Tattooing in Lansdale. Commissioners Shapiro and Richards, along with DA Risa Ferman, honed their marksmanship at the Montgomery County Public Safety Training Campus last Friday.
On Friday, May 4th, Montgomery County Commissioners Josh Shapiro and Leslie Richards toured the Montgomery County Safety Training Campus, and had the opportunity to fire handguns and a Thompson submachine gun. The facility is located at 1175 Conshohocken Road, in the Conshohocken section of Plymouth Township. District Attorney Risa Ferman, Chief Operating Officer Lauren Lambrugo, Sheriff Eileen Behr, and a number of other county employees joined the commissioners on their tour. Upper Moreland Police Department’s (UMPD) participation in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day was a huge success. The event, which is nationally sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration, took place locally at the Giant Food Store in Willow Grove yesterday. From 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Upper Moreland police officer Kelly Ruddell and Community Service Responder Tina McGuckin manned a large display table, located at the main entrance to the supermarket.
