UMPS Curriculum Fair Celebrates a Year of Learning

The Upper Moreland Primary School Curriculum Fair invites the whole school community to see the academic highlights of the school’s students.

It was a proud night for all the participants at the May 17 Upper Moreland Primary School (UMPS) Curriculum Fair. The event took place from 6:15 – 7:15 p.m. throughout the UMPS building, where families of the school’s 700 students took a gallery walk, admiring various academic highlights of the past school year. “It’s a collage of different activities or projects from the school year,” Susan Smith, UMPS principal, said. The students’ artwork, science projects and essays festooned the hallway walls, leading visitors into classrooms with even more colorful and spectacular school projects. UMHS Student Earns $1,000 Scholarship from American Heritage Federal Credit Union

The scholarship was given by the American Heritage Federal Credit Union in recognition, of Upper Moreland High School student Malisha Liyanage.

American Heritage Federal Credit Union is proud to ease the financial burden of college expenses by offering twenty-five $1,000 college scholarships to young credit union members. American Heritage Federal Credit Union’s Scholarship Committee selected the 2012 scholarship recipients based on their scholarly merits, community and school involvement, a letter of recommendation, and a submitted essay on how American Heritage can help achieve their American Dream. Queen of Angels Students Give Service to Get Unity

On their third and final Unity Day, the soon-to-be Queen of Angels School students give back to the community through various service projects.

On the early morning of May 14, St. David and Our Lady Help of Christians (OLHC) students stood in a long line, waiting to help paint a mural. The mural depicts a brown cross in its center with a rainbow standing high in the background. Its colorful ends reach from one side of the mural to the other. At the top are the words: “Queen of Angels” – the name of the new Catholic regional school these students will soon call home. In helping to paint this large, canvas mural, each student took a turn having the palms of their hands painted a particular color; then marked the mural with their unique handprint. “So, it leaves a little piece of everybody,” Sarah Galbreadth, an OLHC parent, said with a smile. Eastern Students Win Medals at SkillsUSA State Competition

The Eastern Center for Arts and Technology SkillsUSA medal winners will head to the national SkillsUSA competitions in Kansas City, Missouri. A few medal winners are from Upper Moreland High School.

Thirty-eight students from Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove competed in their skill areas or with their leadership proficiency at the SkillsUSA State Competitions held April 18, 19 and 20 at the Hershey Convention Center. Students from Pennsylvania took part in the competition. Gold medal winners will represent EASTERN at the national-level competitions to be held June 23-27 in Kansas City, Missouri. SkillsUSA is a national student leadership organization that encourages students to be productive individuals in our democratic society, work to their potential, become responsible, be proud of their accomplishments and supportive of their community. Join Field of Dreams on a Bus Trip to Baltimore

As a fundraiser, the nonprofit organization, who hopes to build a First Class baseball field for UMHS students, will host a bus trip to watch the Phillies play the Orioles.

Field of Dreams, a nonprofit organization based in Upper Morealand, will host a bus trip to the city of Baltimore in to attend the June 10 Philadelphia Phillies vs. Baltimore Orioles game. The trip is intended as a fundraising and project awareness event, as the Field of Dreams raises money to continue construction for a First Class baseball field on the property of Upper Moreland High School, in a community-led recognition of the recent UMHS baseball program league achievements. The trip will leave from Upper Moreland Middle School, located at 4,000 Orangemans Road in Hatboro, at 7:45 p.m. on June 10 in time for the 1:35 p.m. game. UMHS - Willow Grove Rotary Club Student of the Month: Tyler Foerst

Upper Moreland High School's May 2012 student of the month participates with the Jewish Relief Fund through Kiwanis.

The Upper Moreland High School May Student of the month is Tyler Foerst. Tyler is the President of the National Honor Society, is active in Key Club, Film Club and Ski Club. He is also a member of the soccer and baseball teams.  Outside of school, Tyler coaches the 8 & 9 year old hoops basketball team. He participates in the JRA (Jewish Relief Fund) through the Key Club, and helps to run the food drive for his sisters Daisy Girl Scout Troop, which benefits families in Upper Moreland.  Tyler plans to attend Drexel University in the fall and major in Business.

Upper Moreland Students Go Extra Mile with ‘Walk to Get Smart’

Upper Moreland School district students participated in a UMEF fundraising campaign to purchase interactive white boards and other technology.

The Upper Moreland Education Foundation (UMEF) fundraising letters went out during the second week of April.  These letters, which asked for a donation from the recipient, unveiled a new UMEF fundraising event, called “Walk to Get Smart”: The goal of this fundraiser is to purchase “Smart Board” Interactive White Boards and technology devices for every student in every classroom in the Upper Moreland Township School District. When the letters returned late this month, the response was overwhelming. “It was unbelievable,” Dan Noble, UMEF president, said. “We got a huge response from the community.” While Noble said the final tally has not been completed yet, the response in donations has well exceeded the UMEF original goal of $30,000. …

Eastern Student of the Month: Casey Hensley

Eastern Center for Arts and Technology's May Student of the month is enrolled in the school's Engineering Technology program.

Casey Hensley is the May 2012 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove. He is in his second year of EASTERN’s Electronics Engineering Technology program and a senior at Lower Moreland High School. The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN’s faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor. At EASTERN, Casey maintains an A average in his Electronics Engineering Technology program while being active in SkillsUSA as the SkillsUSA 2011 – 2012 PM session President. He received first place for Electronics Technology at the SkillsUSA District Competition held January 31 – …

Eastern's Auto Technology Scholarship Helps Drive Student Accomplishments

The Robert H. Mertz Memorial Scholarship for Futher Education in Automotive Technology at Abington Bank will be awarded to a SkillsUSA Student.

Robert H. Mertz taught Automotive Technology at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) from 1966 to 1988. After his passing on March 27, 2008, his daughter, Ellen Mertz-Yoesron, set up the Robert H. Mertz Memorial Scholarship for Further Education in Automotive Technology at Abington Bank in recognition of her father’s positive impact on the lives of many of his students. Naturally mechanically inclined, Mertz got involved with mechanics during his time in the Army in Okinawa, where he worked in the motor pool on trucks during the Korean conflict. In 1965, the newly formed Eastern Montgomery County Vocational Technical School (EASTERN’s original name) was seeking teachers and Mertz was one of the first teachers employed in …
