Repeating the Words of a President: Roosevelt's D-Day Speech

At the request of a veteran, commissioner Joe Lavalle publicly read President Franklin Roosevelt's D-Day radio address at the June 11 Community Development Committee meeting.

Typically, prior to the start of Upper Moreland Township municipal meetings, a moment of silence is observed. “We’re going to start our meeting with a moment of silent mediation, but this evening, I’m going to start it a little differently,” Ward 4 commissioner Joe Lavalle said at the June 11 Community Development Committee meeting. Lavalle, who is also the chairperson of the committee, started the meeting off by recounting his encounter with a U.S. military veteran. According to Lavalle, who is an architect by profession, he was out of town for business last week. “On Wednesday, I was in the presence of a war veteran, a military man,” Lavalle said. “Last Wednesday was June 6, which was the 68th anniversary of D-Day.” Lavalle said that he …

Storm Water Subcommittee Talks Potential Project Criteria

The second update of the Community Development subcommittee calls issues between private properties vs. public infrastructure too early to settle.

At the previous Storm Water subcommittee update, which took place during the Dec. 12, 2011 Community Development Committee meeting, criteria that would prioritize storm water projects were a major concern. The Storm Water subcommittee updates appear as an ongoing agenda item of the monthly Community Development Committee meetings. During the Jan. 23 meeting, committee chairperson Joe Lavalle, Ward 4 commissioner, said that the project criteria would most likely be based on:     “In terms of getting this committee off the ground, we’re not ignoring any particular area or problem, whether it be on a public infrastructure or whether it’s on a private property,” Lavalle said during the committee meeting. “If it is brought to the three of us on…

Barbara, I don't have a flooding problem. my immediate neighbors do. My yard was graded long ago (1983 by a previous owner) into a swale that flows away from my house. Living half way up the hill, all the water that passes out of our yards goes downhill to the flooding at Evans Circle. It is a whole block and effects a whole section. This is a community problem. All we are asking for is technical …   more ›

UM Township Accepts Horsham Township Invitation for Naval Air Station Input

In a letter, the township accepted the offer of joining the sub-committees of Horsham Township that would help decide the fate of the former air-base.

In July, Horsham Township sent a letter to the board of Upper Moreland commissioners, requesting support to oppose future use of the Willow Grove Naval Air Station as any type of airport or runway. In that letter, commissioners and residents of Upper Moreland were also invited to take part in various Horsham Township Council sub-committees, as a way for Upper Moreland to have direct input, but not take part in the ultimate decision-making for land redevelopment proposals. The proceeding monthly Upper Moreland Township Community Development Committee meetings, including the Sept. 19 meeting, gave commissioners and the public the opportunity to address potential consequences of various redevelopment projects Horsham Township might consider. …

Miller’s Ale House All Set to Begin Construction

The full board of commissioners approved the land development application of the restaurant during the Sept. 12 regular meeting. Also, a commissioner addresses power outages and a resident reports a sewer issue.

At the Sept. 12 full board regular meeting, the commissioners gave unanimous approval on a resolution that will allow the construction of a Miller’s Ale House restaurant. Representatives of the restaurant were present at the meeting, helping to answer any final questions the board had for the project. As with last month’s Community Development Committee meeting, the board reviewed each of the several waiver requests by Miller’s Ale House. As reported in a previous Patch article, the waivers concerned relatively minor details in the overall construction plans, such as shrubbery placement and the use of rain gardens. However, the majority of the waivers did adhere to the township’s newly amended ordinance on zoning and land development (No. …
