Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered to .05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. Internationally, only a handful of countries, including Canada, the United States and England, have a BAC limit of .08 while most of the …

Upper Moreland Township has posted its most recent charges made by UMPD. Some incidents are previous arrests that have now been charged.   Shakia Nida McCray of Philadelphia was charged with Retail Theft on January 2, 2013. Jonathan Ian Sokolow of Willow Grove was charged with Harassment on January 11, 2013. Mark James Cooney of Warrington was charged with Retail Theft on January 13, 2013. Michael William Pershing of Warrington was charged with Retail Theft on January 13, 2013. Steven Sands of Willow Grove was charged with DUI Controlled Substances on January 17, 2013.

Upper Moreland Police Make Handful of Arrests

The following information was supplied by the Upper Moreland Police Department.

The Upper Moreland Police Department recently posted its latest arrest made in the township. The information is related to arrests, and does not necessarily mean these people will be charged in each offense. Morgan Armstrong-Feite of Pocono Summit was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on 12-30-2012. Kathleen Baker of Horsham was charged with DUI High Rate of Alcohol on January 8, 2013. Andrew Schandein of Willow Grove was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on 01-09-2013. Ramson Saint-Fleur of Philadelphia was charged with Retail Theft on January 11, 2013. PennDOT Teams Up for Labor Day DUI Enforcement Campaign

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign will run through Sept. 3.

PennDOT, police, the Valley Forge Area DUI Enforcement Team and the Montgomery County Health Department will kick off a Labor Day DUI enforcement campaign at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 31, in front of the Target Pharmacy, 2250 Chemical Road, Plymouth Meeting, Montgomery County. Police statewide will participate in the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign through Sept. 3. During the Labor Day holiday enforcement, Pennsylvania’s effort will highlight the increasing issue of drug-impaired drivers and conduct roving patrols and DUI checkpoints.
