County's Public Safety Radio System in Critical Condition

Parts from the manufacturer are no longer available for an aging system as potentially 'catastrophic' component failures loom.

The county's emergency radio system is now in a state of emergency. With many of the county's chiefs of police crowding its Norristown meeting chamber, the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution Wednesday declaring that an "actual emergency exists" in the county's aging public safety telecommunications infrastructure. Commissioner Jim Matthews described the measure as a "Band-Aid" that gives the county "the ability to immediately respond to any shortcomings in the system." Those shortcomings are reportedly multiplying. Lower Gwynedd Chief of Police John Scholly called the increasing difficulty of obtaining replacement parts for the system a "major concern." As a child, Second Alarmers Rescue Squad's assistant chief of operations got into the emergency services field by watching the TV show "Emergency!"

After graduating from high school in 1994, Davidson attended Hahnemann University, where he studied emergency services management. Upon finishing his education in the late 90s, Davidson owned and operated a private EMS transfer service for three years while volunteering with SARS. He tired of the daily grind …

Medical professionals to present at international stroke conference

New stroke assessment tool has helped with earlier detection, quicker treatment

Just like the old saying that there’s more than one way to skin a cat, local medical personnel believe there’s more than one way to assess a potential stroke. Next week, a team of medical professionals, comprising Abington Memorial Hospital Stroke Center Director Dr. B. Franklin Diamond, as well as Second Alarmers Rescue Squad Captains Brad Nash and Christopher Reif, will travel to Los Angeles to present assessment techniques at the International Stroke Conference. “The focus is the development of a synergistic approach to stroke care,” Reif said. “Everyone works together.” Added Nash, the purpose is to “get everyone from the paramedics up to the neurologists speaking the same language.” To do that, the Second Alarmers crews, under the …
