Community Supports UMPD Drug Take-Back Event

The Upper Moreland Police Department participated in the bi-annual Drug Take-Back Day to keep unused prescriptions from hitting the streets.

The Upper Moreland Police Department (UMPD) again received much community support in its participation of the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, April 28. The Drug Enforcement Administration organizes the bi-annual event. Locally, the Drug Take-Back Day, as it’s also known, took place from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Giant Food Store in Willow Grove, who is a local partner of the event with the UMPD. Participants of the Drug Take-Back day would simply stop by the UMPD table and place their unused prescriptions into one of the marked bins, no questions asked.   “We’re trying to avoid the diversion of medication from off the streets,” Todd Smith, UMPD Field Training officer, explained. “We’re trying to keep them from becoming street drugs…

Giant Supports Troops with $450,000 Donation

Throughout the month of May, Giant collected donations from customers to benefit the USO or the Wounded Warriors Project.

In a show of support for the men and women who are bravely serving in the Armed Forces, customers at GIANT Food Stores and MARTIN’S Food Markets generously donated $450,423 through the stores’ annual Support Our Troops campaign. This year’s in-store fundraiser benefited regional USOs throughout the company’s operating area and the Wounded Warriors Project. “On behalf of our regional USO partners and the Wounded Warriors Project, thank you to all of our customers and associates for their overwhelming support in helping to keep our nation’s heroes stay connected to their families and assisting those who were injured overcome obstacles,” said Rick Herring, president. Giant Helps Willow Grove Resident Reach Healthy Milestone

With the help of Giant's individual in-store nutrition consultations, Willow Grove resident Helen Johnson was able to lose 113 pounds.

For many people, making the choice to eat better and live a healthier lifestyle begins at the supermarket. Mary Ann Moylan, RD, LDN, CDE, an in-store nutritionist at the GIANT Super Food Store in Willow Grove, has been assisting hundreds of customers make healthier choices since the store opened four years ago. Helen Johnson, a regular GIANT shopper from Willow Grove, recently reached a milestone with the help of Mary Ann and her individual nutrition consultations. Giant to Open New Fueling Station in Willow Grove

Tomorrow, Jan. 18, marks the grand opening of Giant Food Store's new fueling station and convenience kiosk.

GIANT Food Store will open its Willow Grove fuel station on Jan. 18 at 8 a.m. Located at 424 York Road, right down the street from the GIANT Super Food Store, the fuel station also features a new 1,000 square foot ‘grab and go’ kiosk. Operating hours are 6 a.m. – 11 p.m. daily. This kiosk will offer a multitude of convenience products geared for motorists in a hurry. Customers will find in the kiosk a full complement of chilled beverages, coffee station, favorite snacks, popular automotive products, lottery machine, ATM machine, ice, plus GIANT milk and bread. Viewfinder: 13th Annual 'Fowl' Shooting Contest

People of various age ranges participated in a foul shooting contest which gave them a chance to win a frozen turkey in time for Thanksgiving.

Giant to Collect Donations for Victims of Recent Natural Disasters

Giant Food Store will collect donations from Sept. 17 to 26.

In light of the recent natural disasters that have taken their toll on local communities throughout the operating areas of Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets, the grocery companies announced that they will collect donations in all stores on behalf of the American Red Cross to aid in the relief efforts. Beginning Saturday, Sept. 17, and continuing through Monday, Sept. 26, customers can make a donation at any Giant or Martin's checkout. “Thousands of customers in communities throughout our operating area were hit hard by recent heavy weather,” said Rick Herring, division president. “All of the monies collected will be donated to local American Red Cross chapters to assist families who continue to struggle with basic necessities and…

Giant Pharmacy will offer flu shots and other immunizations for the upcoming cold season.

Staying flu-free is a priority this Fall and the best way to manage flu is to prevent it through vaccination. Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets are now offering flu shots at all of their in-store pharmacies. No appointment is needed, and convenient walk-in vaccinations are provided by trusted in-store pharmacists any time the pharmacy is open. “Flu shots are reformulated every year so it’s important to receive your vaccination annually, even if you received one last year,” said Leigh Shirley, director of pharmacy. “In addition to offering flu shots, most of our pharmacies also offer a variety of additional immunizations, including those that protect against pneumonia and shingles.” The cost for the flu shot, which provides …

Giant to Hold its Ground During Hurricane Irene

Willow Grove Giant has several back-up plans to remain in service during the storm.

Many people have taken to their local grocery store in preparation for Hurricane Irene. The Giant Food Store in Willow Grove also experienced increased visits from weather-worried shoppers. “Business has been very brisk, and very busy,” Chris Brand, Giant Food Store’s manager of public relations, said. According to Brand, people have mostly purchased basic-needs food, including bottled water, soda, juice, milk and other dairy products, and bread. “And lots of snacks,” he added. But, according to Brand, topping the shopping list of most customers are lunchmeats at Giant’s deli. UM Task Force to Hold Train Station Feasibility Study Open House

The public will have the opportunity to say what's working and what's not with the Willow Grove Train Station.

The Upper Moreland Revitalization Task Force will hold an open house meeting at the Giant Food Store community room June 23. The 4 to 8 p.m. meeting will address the task force’s focus on the future of the Willow Grove Train Station as part of the overall revitalization efforts. Although every task force meeting is open to the public, Thursday’s meeting is of special significance, as the public will have the opportunity to provide direct input on the development of the Willow Grove Train station.
