Kiwanis Celebrates Valentine’s with Long-Running Special Persons Dance

The nearly 30-year old event lifts up the special needs community by giving them an opportunity to get down.

The Kiwanis of Old York Road held its annual Special Persons Valentine’s Dance on Feb. 11. The dance, which took place in the Upper Moreland Intermediate School Cafetorium, held over 100 Kiwanis volunteers, people with special needs and their caregivers. “It began when Special Olympics began,” Tim Hoffman, longtime Kiwanis of Old York Road member, said. “Kiwanis International embraced the idea.” According to Hoffman, Kiwanis of Old York participated in Special Olympics events since the 1970s, where they helped organize track and field, as well as bowling events. However, by the early 1980s, Kiwanis of Old York Road was looking for something more unique to reach out to the special needs community. One member, David Bender, suggested a …

Kiwanis to hold Holiday Breakfast at Eastern

The Kiwanis of Old York Road will hold its 10th annual Holiday Breakfast at Eastern, featuring Eastern's culinary students.

For the last 10 years, the Kiwanis Club of Old York Road has hosted a Holiday Breakfast at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (Eastern), featuring the culinary creations of the school’s culinary students. According to Tim Hoffman, Kiwanis of Old York Road secretary, the breakfast started out as a fundraiser for the charitable club, but eventually blossomed into an ongoing partnership. “The Eastern Center asked that the Kiwanis Club make a donation to their foundation,” Hoffman said in an e-mail. “The donation has always been a scholarship to a culinary student, because they are the ones who do the work for the breakfast.” Hoffman added that any funds not distributed to the school will go toward helping local families in need during the…

Kiwanis Unveils New Township Holiday Tree

Nearly 150 Upper Moreland residents came out to celebrate the township's Holiday Tree unveiling.

Upper Moreland residents participated in a long-awaited Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony. An estimated 150 participants gathered,  and were encouraged by the unseasonably warm weather, in the fountain area of Veterans Memorial Park for the event. The event featured sounds of the seasons by The Party Continues, as well as free refreshments. The Kiwanis of Old York Road spearheaded the event, organizing the festivities, as well as purchasing the $7,000, 18-foot artificial tree. According to Kiwanis of Old York Road president, Bob Young, the tree is expected to last over a decade, and will be accompanied by an annual tree-lighting ceremony. The tree itself is adorned with 750 LED, energy-efficient light bulbs, and may increase incrementally …

Willow Grove Holiday Tree Lighting Celebration Scheduled

Township commissioners praise Kiwanis Club for selecting a more energy efficient artificial tree.

The tradition of a Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony will return to Upper Moreland on Nov. 27, in large part through the efforts of the Kiwanis Club of Old York Road. But instead of the township’s traditional real tree, an artificial LED tree will be installed. The township commissioners approved of the holiday tree lighting ceremony at the commissioners regular meeting, which took place earlier this week. “I’m very glad to see that it’s an LED tree, because it’s very energy efficient,” Ward 3 commissioner Donna Parsell said at the meeting. According to the Kiwanis-supplied documents, which the township commissioners reviewed before the vote, an artificial LED tree is over 70-percent more energy efficient than a tree lit with conventional …

Kiwanis Octoberfest a Huge Success, Next Event May Unveil Downtown Holiday Tree

Kiwanis of Old York Road members submit photos from their recent Octoberfest, held at the VFW. Also, the nonprofit may be bringing some holiday cheer to Upper Moreland.

The Kiwanis of Old York Road’s Oct. 1 Oktoberfest was a well-attended success. According to newly elected president Bob Young, close to 100 people attended this year’s annual Kiwanis fundraising event. “It was a great success, everybody really pulled in from the group, especially the younger generation,” Young said of the Kiwanis volunteers. Young also attributes the increased success of this year’s Oktoberfest to the newly renovated Willow Grove VFW, specifically it’s new no-smoking policy. The event included an evening with a live “Oompah Band,” and, according to young, the funds raised were double than those of last year’s Oktoberfest. All money raised will go toward Kiwanis-sponsored programs within Willow Grove. Announcement of a …

Looking so forward to a Christmas tree in the center of town this year, but please call it what it is - a CHRISTMAS TREE!! This should not be taken as offensive by anyone who celebrates a different holiday, and we need not be submissive to perceived offenses. Joe & Elaine Leibrandt   more ›

Kiwanis Club’s Octoberfest Raises Funds for Children

Kiwanis Club of Old York Road's third annual Octoberfest will take place at the renovated/redecorated non-smoking Willow Grove VFW, located on 305 Moreland Road in Willow Grove, Oct. 1 from 7 to 11 p.m.

Attending a 17-day beer festival in Munich, Germany, may not be in most families’ budgets, however, the Kiwanis Club of Old York Road is proposing an alternative celebration a bit closer to home. The non-profit club invites the public to kick off October with its third annual Octoberfest. The event will take place at the renovated/redecorated non-smoking Willow Grove VFW, located on 305 Moreland Road in Willow Grove, Oct. 1 from 7 to 11 p.m. “Last year, we had about 100 people attend our annual Oktoberfest and a great time was had by all,” Bob Young, president-elect of The Kiwanis Club of Old York Road, said. “The money raised will stay within Willow Grove for scholarships and disadvantaged families. Our main concern is children.” The …

Howard Cohen Keeps His Passion Going at Upper Moreland

From school psychologist to Key Club advisor, Cohen still has the energy to do it all.

Howard Cohen is beginning his 34th year as a school psychologist at Upper Moreland High School.  It’s not impossible to believe he has the energy to go another 34 years.  Cohen has been a fixture at Upper Moreland and said he has no plans to retire anytime soon. His love for his job has remained intact for 34 years, and he shows no signs of slowing down. “It’s a fascinating job,” said Cohen. “You have to stay sharp, and you have to stay on your feet. I don’t know if retirement would allow me to do that. It’s always a challenging job.” Cohen realizes the impact he is making on the students at Upper Moreland. He is not only flattered to see his former students in their adult lives, but also their children who are now attending Upper Moreland…

Kiwanis Fundraiser a 'Phantastic' Success

Nearly 200 people came out to support the Kiwanis of Old York Road fundraiser, held at Sonic.

On April 10, the Kiwanis Club of Old York Road held a fundraiser that was simply “Phantastic.” The event, which took place at the Sonic restaurant in Willow Grove, drew nearly 200 people, and featured family-friendly games, face painting and lots of Sonic giveaways. But, it was apparent that the most popular feature of the Kiwanis event was the opportunity to meet the Phillie Phanatic. “A lot more people came out than we originally thought,” Kiwanis member Jim Mathers said. “We told everyone to come out in their Phillies gear.” The Phanatic’s wild antics brought smiles to everyone’s faces, including the very surprised folks sitting in the Sonic drive-through as he playfully peeked his head into their car windows. According to Kiwanis of …
