Obamacare Ruling Upholds SCOTUS Responsibility to US

A letter to the editor of one resident's opinion on the Supreme Court Affordable Healthcare Act ruling

The Supreme Court’s victorious healthcare ruling today ranks right up there with the passage of the Women’s Right to Vote! In the past few years it seems the Republican voice has been to uphold the rights and privileges of business over their Christian responsibility of caring for the people.  Today the Supreme Court reversed that voice and upheld their responsibility to the people of this great nation.  In these bickering days of uncompromised attitudes, it’s so easy to forget our moral and social obligation to each other and think only of ourselves. This country did not become great because we were uncompromising, but rather, because we were passionate about working together to bring about a great nation for the people by the people. So …

Letter: Univest Opposed to Library Underfunding

Univest Corporation Chairman William Aichele responds to the threat of underfunded libraries in Montgomery County

Think you don’t need a healthy public library system? Think again. The recessionary economy of the past few years has put tremendous pressure on public resources that depend upon local taxes. Budgets for public schools, public parks, a variety of community events and other community institutions have been threatened with underfunding or no funding at all. Of particular concern to us at Univest Corporation is the underfunding of our communities’ local libraries. The Indian Valley Public Library, the North Wales Area Library and the Upper Perkiomen Valley Library are prime examples. Next year, each of these important community institutions will be challenged to find new funding as money from state and local governments is expected to …

Letter to the Editor: In Memory of Henry "Dick" Sayer

Upper Moreland Historical Commission vice-president and longtime friend Mariann O’Connor reflects on the life and work of Dick Sayer.

Editor's Note: The following letter is by Upper Moreland Historical Commission vice-president Mariann O'Connor. --- Many of you may have had the good fortune this year to attend one of the wonderful events and programs celebrating Willow Grove’s 300th Anniversary.  But what many of you did not know was that Dick Sayer, President of the Upper Moreland Historical Commission, the person who gave birth to this Tricentennial celebration, was facing his own monumental event.  On Sat., May 7, 2011, Dick, with his ever-spirited nature and smiling face, came to see us off at one of our Tricentennial kick-off events, the Historic Sites Trolley Tour.  The day before that event, Dick had been given the grim news that he had only 2-3 months to live.   …

Letter to the Editor: Bad Budget

State Rep. Josh Shapiro decries the govenor's budget that would force job cuts and the loss of certain health benefits.

The 2011-12 PA state budget is irresponsible and will result in job losses. It divests from the next generation and those who are most in need and shifts the tax burden and tough decisions onto local and county governments. In the governor’s budget address, he spoke about the need to create jobs. Yet this budget actually slashes thousands of jobs in Pennsylvania. The governor’s own budget analysis says that 1,550 jobs will be lost throughout Pennsylvania, and this budget is consistent with that. School districts estimate that up to 7,500 jobs will be shed in communities throughout our Commonwealth. For those seeking a job, this budget cuts job training by $5.9 million—training that has helped 70,000 workers in the last five years. I want …
