Health Department Inspects Upper Moreland Schools, Rita's and More

A handful of local businesses were paid a visit by the Montgomery County Health Department this past month.

The Montgomery County Department of Health conducted inspections of  many food-service establishments in Upper Moreland this month. Click on the inspection report link to read the results for each establishment.

Students Bringing Own Computers Could Help Offset Costs for School

While examining the budget, Upper Moreland officials say they are looking into allowing students to bring their own computers and cell phones to school.

School board officials are currently in the process of figuring out their finances and trying to find ways to come in under their budget for the 2013-14 school year. “We start with keeping all of our options open, and then we can narrow it down,” Upper Moreland Superintendent Robert Milrod said. “We’re not adding at this point. Anything we add will mean even more cuts.” One way the school may offset its technology costs, for example, is the “Bring your own device” initiative where students would be allowed to bring their own computers and cell phones for use on school grounds. This would help alleviate costs of buying/upgrading school computers. The Lower Moreland School District starting using this system on a “pilot” basis this year. …

What about school liability with regard to any theft or damage of these devices? As we all know, expensive laptops and smart phones will walk. Extension cords for classroom charging operation will produce safety/tripping hazard. Many of the students may only have desktops at home, thus parents would be pressured into the purchase of an expensive laptop for their student.   more ›

Free Italian Ice at Rita's on Wednesday

In celebration of the spring equinox, Rita's is giving away free Italian ice Wednesday.

Wednesday is the first day of spring, which can only mean one thing: free Rita's. Rita's annual Italian ice giveaway in celebration of spring will be held Wednesday from noon to 9 p.m. at all open Rita's locations. According to its website, Rita's has been giving away free Italian ice to mark the first day of spring for 20 years. In 2012, Rita's gave out more than 1.2 million cups of Italian Ice in a ten hour period. Want to indulge in a free, tasty treat? Where to get Tour Ticket for the $260M Powerball Drawing

There are a number of places in Willow Grove to get your Powerball tickets for Wednesday's drawing.

Here’s your chance to be a millionaire!  The jackpot for Wednesday’s Powerball drawing has climbed to $260 million. Nobody has had the winning jackpot ticket since Feb. 14. The drawing takes place at 10:59 p.m. Wednesday night and will be broadcast on local news channels. Ticket sales for the drawing end no later than 10 p.m.; check with your local retailer to find out its cutoff policy.

Davisville Road to be Closed at Byberry Most of Thursday

Davisville Road will be closed for a large portion on Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

According to the Upper Moreland Police Department have announced that Davisville Road will be closed at Byberry Road on Thursday Feb. 14 for a substantial part of the day. Cars will not be permitted to drive north on Davisville from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you use these roads for your morning or daily commute, please be advised to find alternate routes. Traffic traveling south on Davisville Rd. will have to turn onto Byberry Rd. Byberry Rd. will be reduced to one lane at Davisville Rd. The police department has advised residents to expect delays.

Accidents Cause Havoc on Roads Monday Night

Along with the snow came accidents on local roads in Montgomery County.

A fast-moving winter weather system may be to blame fore several accidents on numerous local roads Monday evening. Snow started to fall around the region shortly after dark in Montgomery County and ended up dropping close to half an inch, according to the National Weather Service’s Mount Holly, N.J. office. With the snow came several vehicle crashes. Crews from Bucks and Montgomery counties responded to County Line and Bux Mont roads on the Lower Moreland and Lower Southampton border at around 9:30 p.m. for an accident with reported injuries. According to the Montgomery County dispatch website, vehicles involved in the crash ended up on both sides on the roadway. Police in Horsham responded to a car that went into a fence at Maple Avenue …

Local Martin Luther King Jr. Observances

New Bethel A.M.E. Church will host a service tonight in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Pastor Hamlin will be preaching tonight, Wednesday Jan. 16, at New Bethel A.M.E. Church, 1646 Prospect Ave., Willow Grove, in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. The Ministerial Alliance Service will start at 7 p.m. Alliance churches include: First Baptist Church of Crestmont; McKinley Memorial; First Baptist Church of Huntingdon Valley; New Bethel A.M.E.; Willow Grove Community Baptist Church; Antioch Baptist Church; Second Baptist Church of Doylestown. Local Students to be Honored for Hurricane Sandy Relief Effort

There will be a ceremony today, Dec. 14 at 8 a.m. at EASTERN, where a donation will be accepted on behalf of the American Ref Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

The Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) SkillsUSA school-wide officers have chosen to support the American Red Cross in their mission to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy as their community service project for the year.  In November, the SkillsUSA Officers collected $449 from fellow students, faculty, administration, and staff members. After witnessing the effects of the storm locally and watching news footage of the widespread damage, the EASTERN SkillsUSA officers approached their SkillsUSA advisor, Ms. Karon Crickmore, about a potential fundraiser.
