Unsettled weather starts the week and it may finish it if Hurricane Isaac's leftover rains impact us.
Some school districts are back in swing this week as summer winds down. The good news is an extended weekend is ahead of us. The bad news is that it may rain for part of it as the leftovers from Hurricane Isaac possibly track into the Mid Atlantic. Isaac's remnants won't produce Irene or even Lee-like impacts across the region. No winds to 80 miles per hour. No rainfall that's measured by the foot. Nor will there be coastal flooding issues to deal with or orders to get the hell off the beach. Those type of impacts will be felt along the Gulf Coast, where Isaac will make landfall on Tuesday evening. Isaac's future from landfall is less clear at this point, with some computer modeling suggesting it will track through the Ohio Valley and …

The week's weather starts on a damp note but should generally be nice and not too hot.
We've had a rainy run the past couple of weeks– Philadelphia has picked up over four inches of rain since Aug. 1, with Reading and Allentown both pcking up over three inches of rain. Outside of a wet start to Monday, most of the week ahead should feature rather nice weather. Monday's rainy start is associated with a disturbance that is riding along the cool front that pushed through the region on Friday night and Saturday. Once this gets out of the way later in the morning hours, Monday afternoon should wind up nice. The other potential chance of rain in the work week is on Wednesday, with a weak trough that will pass through the region and up the coast. It could trigger a few passing showers as it moves through. Outside of Wednesday, the …

We start out nice, if not cool depending on one's tastes, before the prospect of more 90s for the latter half of the week.
Last week's first official heat wave was pretty intense as temperatures reached the middle 90s for three consecutive days. While thunderstorms missed a number of locations in the outer western and northern burbs on Friday, other locations were drenched with heat busting relief that allowed us to enjoy a very nice weekend. That niceness gets reinforced with a cool front crossing our region on Monday, although a price will be paid with some showers and storms accompanying the frontal passage through the region. Tuesday and Wednesday shape up as pretty nice days, with a relatively cool Tuesday by late June standards. High temperatures are unlikely to top 80 degrees. There could be a shower up towards Allentown and in the Poconos, thanks to…

Rain, 'training' thunderstorms and flooding
This weekend's foray into summery temperatures and warmth is thankfully not the start of a prolonged heat wave. The combination of a weak backdoor cool front pushing down from New England and a weakening ridge of high pressure in the atmosphere will help nudge temperatures back closer to reality for the start of the week. As the ridge of high pressure continues to weaken, a cool front to our west will nudge east towards us for the middle of the week, potentially bringing us heavy rain and a thunderstorm for Tuesday night and Wednesday. Computer model projections show an inch of rain to perhaps over three inches of rain for Tuesday and Wednesday with higher rainfall totals possible over the Poconos. The combination of a moisture rich …

This week may see weather that's more typical for early May than early June.
Personally, I like late spring and early summer quite a bit ― it's not my favorite weather when compared to October, but this time of the year brings you some of the longest days of the year. Also, if the pattern is right you can get some really nice weather that rivals early fall in terms of low humidity and milder temperatures that we'll miss when summer heat arrives in a few weeks. This week, despite shower chances, will at least provide the combination of lower humidity and temperatures that are more typical for early May than early June. The cause is last Friday's storm system that brought rain and wind to the region. The storm system's energy in the upper portions of the atmosphere ended up parking itself over the Great Lakes this…

The chances for the heaviest rains will likely be from Monday night into Tuesday morning.
May is one of those months that can bring us summery heat, cool mornings, and sometimes frontal boundaries that like to hang out over the region as they lose their punch and run into the developing summertime Bermuda high in the Atlantic. We've had a few "slow moving fronts" through the region during the past three weeks. This week promises yet another front and another slow track through the region between Monday and Wednesday. It won't rain all day on Monday or Tuesday, but when it does, the rain could be heavy. Some spots could pick up a couple of inches of rain in the next couple of days. The best chances for heavier rain will be from Monday night into Tuesday morning. The main rain axis then shifts into New Jersey for the remainder …

But this weekend is looking to be the nicest we've seen in a month.
Last week's forecast blew up in many a forecaster's face, including my own. A slow moving warm front moved even more slowly than anticipated, resulting in a couple of days of clouds and a dreary middle of the week. The warm front finally cleared, but after thunderstorms along a cool front that slid south through the region on Friday night, another round of clouds from the Atlantic took over. Frontal boundaries slow as they try to slip south of our latitude at this time of the year, thanks to the developing subtropical high pressure ridge of the Southeast. That ridge prevents colder air from sinking too far south, and as longer days continue to weaken influence of colder air masses with each passing day, the pattern can stagnate. Many …

It's going to be rainy and cold in the early part of this week, and may trend to sunnier weather by the weekend, though it'll still be cool.

By the time this week is out, you might forget that it was near 90 degrees a week ago Monday and that it was 80 degrees to start this past weekend. The combination of Saturday night's cold front, which brought thunderstorms and some wild winds in its wake, and the coastal storm that soaked our region on Sunday has us in a cooler state of mind. Keep it there this week as temperatures will be hard pressed to get anywhere near the levels we experienced last week. The coastal storm that blew through here on Sunday is now working into New York State, meandering slowly for the next couple of days. With northwest winds in the wake of this system, the next couple of days will be unsettled but not as soaked. Scattered showers or sprinkles can't …

Partly cloudy skies and warmer weather will blanket the region this week
Lately, it has been about 15 to 20 degrees above average and there hasn't been any complaints. Here are some of Monday's sweltering high temperatures: These temperatures are above average for the middle of July and it's only the middle of April! Some sigh of relief is expected as the weather has calmed down and will stay relatively steady for a while. Expect to see about average temperatures for the next couple of days. Today will be pleasantly normal with partly sunny skies. The sun may have some trouble peeking through the clouds, as a small disturbance passes to the south. High temperatures will reach the low- to mid-60s. North-northwest winds at 3 to 6 mph. During the night, clouds will decrease, giving way to partly cloudy conditions…

April has started out dry and will continue this trend for the entire week
It seems like a tradition to expect dark, gloomy and wet weather during April, but this year has been rebelling against all types of typical weather. This week will be one to take advantage of, as a cooler air mass blocks any type of bad weather. The temperatures will be seasonably comfortable with chilly late nights and mornings. Today started out relatively mild for a typical early-April morning at around 50 degrees. Partly cloudy skies will decrease to mostly sunny conditions as the afternoon rolls around. The high temperature will soar up into the upper 60s. Winds will increase from the northwest initially at 5 to 10 mph, then blowing at 12 to 16 mph. Tonight will be mostly clear with diminishing winds with temperatures steadily …
