Kinnaree

This is a highly rated little Thai-French BYOB.

To our good fortune, chef-owner Tony Kanjanakorn and his wife Ladawan have decided to scale back a bit in their older age. Thus, after many years of successful operation of their Thai-French Alisa Cafes in Upper Darby and Cherry Hill, Tony has opened a much smaller, easier-to-manage B.Y.O.B. in Horsham named Kinnaree in the space that had been the Magnolia Café, bringing his well-honed culinary skills and sunny disposition along with him. I have made several visits to Kinnaree with my LDC (Lovely Dining Companion) and friends in the two years since it opened. The Thai-French cuisine is weighted toward French; two-thirds of the dishes are of French cuisine, or a French-Thai fusion, such as the Thai calamari salad, Thai-style Cornish hen and…

Worth the Whisk with Heather Greenleaf

Carrabba's Italian Grill

The restaurant is consistently crowded, for a good reason.

Carrabba’s Italian Grill was bustling and busy on a Friday night. The Chi Chi’s that once occupied the space is long forgotten, along with the lengthy duration when the lot stood unoccupied.  The bright sign on the Turnpike beckons people in, and the consistent quality of the food makes locals return. The restaurant is so popular that the entrance and bar were standing-room only.  The kids and I fought our way to the hostess stand, and we put in our party’s name.  Carrabba's does not take reservations, but my sister had called ahead. We were given a buzzer, but were soon seated at a big round table in the bar area. Twenty minutes later, and still no sign of my sister, I gave her a call. Despite my doubts about her punctuality, she was not …

I have been to many many restaurants over the years and have found Carrabba's to be one of the best overall in terms of the menu (fresh, well prepared, geat protion size and delicious!), service (friendly, knowleageable, prompt and professional) , atmosphere (the ceiling design seems to mute the chatter and the ambience is very relaxing) and price (reasonable, I have pay a lot more for a lot less…   more ›

Franconi's Pizzeria

Pizza is pizza is pizza. Or is it?

Pizza, like mom’s homemade chicken noodle soup, is a recognizable comfort food. It may not always be the healthiest option out there, but it’s usually a pretty good pick when you’re considering your tastebuds. Franconi’s pies ($11.95 for a 16” plain) start out on a thin crust that’s soft in the middle and crispy on the edges with a sweet homemade tomato sauce. And, if the pie stopped there, we would be in business. Unfortunately, it doesn’t. On top of the tasty crust and thick, red sauce is a solid layer of overly salted cheese. In fact, the cheese is so salted, that it’s hard to taste anything but salt. Any toppings ($2.00 each) fall victim to the same fate. Take a bite and the pleasure of the crust and sauce is quickly overcome by the …

We order from Franconi's fairly often. I've never noticed that the pizza is salty. We like them better than many of the other pizza places in the area.   more ›

Restaurant review: Ristorante Castello

Ristorante Castello gets a new location and a refreshed look.

Late last Summer, Blue Bell area dining-out enthusiasts, bemoaning the loss three years earlier of the once-excellent Alison's restaurant (of Alison Barshak fame), were delighted to learn that a quality restaurant was about to open in that beautiful space.  Indeed, Ristorante Castello, having had a successful five-year run in its former location, in the Lansdale area, moved there on August 2004.  B.Y.O.B. practitioners were especially pleased that, at least for now, it is a B.Y.O.B. My experience with Ristorante Castello goes back to its Lansdale location, when I reviewed it for my column The Main Course in 2006.  It received an overall rating of 4-1/2 m's then.  Thus, I was pleased when a couple of friends invited us to join …
