A Quiet Thanksgiving Before a Stormy End to November

Thanksgiving's weather is expected to be dry and quiet as we continue our peaceful weather pattern around the region.

The weather over the next week is expected to continue the quiet trend established about ten days ago. While temperatures have bounced around between mild and chilled, the weather has been dry and tranquil daily. That will continue, although this week will feature a moderate trend in temperatures each afternoon. Thanksgiving and Black Friday should be particularly nice, with Thanksgiving probably a bit sunnier and Black Friday a bit milder of the two respective days. Afternoon highs each day could flirt with or exceed 60 degrees. Enjoy! A cold shot is lurking for the end of the Thanksgiving weekend and could linger into early next week. The chill will be nothing brutal, but highs may return to the 40s for Sunday and Monday of next week. …

The Brunette Lucy

Can You Have Too Many Turkeys?

Lucy's Matt doesn't think there is such a thing as too many Thanksgiving turkeys.

To me, Thanksgiving is the harbinger of the Christmas season, and I look forward to putting up the tree that weekend. For Matt, however, it marks his favorite day of the year because he loves turkey. He looks forward to the big dinner and all the leftover turkey sandwiches, turkey casseroles, turkey stir fry, you name it. He loves turkey more than Santa loves his elves. So one year, we were out and he wanted to stop in at one of those discount food stores. We don’t have one in our town and Matt likes to shop there whenever he can because second only to turkey, he loves bargains. When we got to the meat aisle, we saw that they had Jennie-O turkeys on sale for 38 cents a pound. I glanced over and saw Matt’s eyes glaze over. He was thrilled; …

Thanksgiving Recipes: How to Cook Stuffing and Other Favorite Side Dishes

A turkey can't just sit alone on the table. Here are some recipes for Thanksgiving's most popular side dishes.

What would a turkey be on Thanksgiving without its faithful side companions? Often more popular than the turkey itself, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and other favorites are staples of the food coma-inducing meal. Try one of the recipes below to bring a new taste to your Thanksgiving feast. Roasted Winter Squash Gauge the amount of squash you’ll need by allowing 1 small squash (acorn and butternut are good choices) for every four people. Cut each squash in half lengthwise and remove seeds. Brush sides and inner cavity with olive oil and place flesh-side down on a lightly-oiled baking sheet. Roast for approximately 45 minutes or until flesh is very soft and easy pulls away from the skin. After removing squash from oven, let …

All of these sound wonderful. But I have a question that I really haven't found an answer that satifyed me. I have heard cooking the stuffing in the bird is something that should not be done any longer. I have done it for "years" with no bad results, but I am getting concerned about it. I don't like the tast of the stuffing that I can't fit into the bird and then put in in foil and cook along …   more ›

If you're hosting Thanksgiving this year, you can try any of the recipes below to add a new kick to your feast. If you're attending someone else’s dinner, hopefully their turkey will taste as good as one of these! Just the name of this recipe makes my mouth water. Photo Contest: What Are You Thankful For?

Share a photo that shows what you're thankful for, and you could win a turkey for Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is fast approaching and we'd like to know what you're thankful for! Post a photo of what you're grateful for to enter our contest. You could win a turkey from McCaffrey's (or the equivalent in a voucher), plus a Patch prize pack. McCaffrey's, with stores in Newtown and Yardley (as well as N.J. sites), lost its power last week during Hurricane Sandy and lost its perishable food stock. "It's just food; we can restock that,"said Kathy Bodine of McCaffrey's. "It's nothing compared to what some of our neighbors lost." Bodine said the company is thankful for its costumers and that's the reason it wanted to donate a prize to the photo contest. Not sure what kind of photo to enter? Well, it can be anything near and dear to you - …

Practical Science with Phil Freda

Gobble, Gobble, Zzzz…

A common Thanksgiving mystery is why after eating loads of turkey, do we feel so tired? This week, we will finally answer this age-old question.

On Thursday, we Americans will stuff our faces to a point that we have awaited all year. Probably the most common Thanksgiving fare includes stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and of course – Turkey! If you’re like me, you load up on all of these tasty treats, find a nice open space on a big comfy couch and stare at the TV, wondering why you just ate so much food until you quietly pass out. Why does this happen? Is it really because of turkey, or is there some other explanation as to why we feel so tired after Thanksgiving dinner?   The #1 Suspect In turkey, and many other meats, there is an amino acid known as tryptophan. Tryptophan is one of the twenty amino acids that are found in living things. Amino acids are the building …
