The Golden Bears varsity basketball team earned the school its first ever district title this season.
Brian Corrado has been part of the Upper Moreland boys basketball team for the last 18 years. He’s served as head coach for the last 15 years, but the 2012-13 season marked a first for the basketball program. The Golden Bears celebrated their first-ever District title this past season, and it was the first time UM had the opportunity to even play in the championship game. The win helped get Corrado’s squad to the state tournament for only the second time in his tenure. “One other year in my time here did we make the state tournament” Corrado said. “That was back in ‘06, when they took four teams in District 1 from AAA and we were the third seed … We set some lofty goals and it was very nice to fulfill that and win a district title." The Upper Moreland Library will host its First Friday Fundraiser on Feb. 1 with an evening of magic and fun.
Presented by the Upper Moreland Free Public Library, the "Magic of the Gustafsons" is back by popular demand. Enjoy a laughter-filled program of fast-moving, eye-appealing, funny magic and audience participation on Friday, Feb. 1 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door. Children: $5; Adults: $7 (with the exception of babies in arms). All proceeds will be used to support summer programming for children, teens and adults. There will also be Thunderbird Bowling, Nintendo Wii, and Crafts. Refreshments will be provided by local restaurants. This program will be put on with the assistance of Kiwanis Club of Old York Road and the Upper Moreland National Honor Society, and the Interact Club.

Upper Moreland has announced a change to its yard waste pickup schedule. There will be no yard waste pickup over the next two weeks on Monday, December 24 or Monday, December 31. The schedule will resume on Monday, January 7, 2013.

Upper Moreland High School senior Nicholas Barber received the October Student of the Month Award from Willow Grove Rotary President, Mr. John Douglass. The Student of the Month award is sponsored by the High School’s faculty and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence and service. Nicholas is the President of the National Honor Society, a Senior Class Officer, and the Secretary of the Key Club. Nicholas has achieved Distinguished Honor Roll throughout High School, and is in the top 5% of his class. Nicholas is currently enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus, AP Physics, AP English, AP United States Government & Politics, and AP European History.
