Upper Morealnd Middle School Leo Club students learned what it was like to be a teenager decades ago from residents of Wesley Enhanced Living.
Students of the Upper Moreland Middle School (UMMS) School Leo Club gave a presentation to residents of Wesley Enhanced Living retirement community that compared the residents’ lives as teenagers with the teen culture of today. “They got to hear a lot of first-hand accounts of people who lived through Vietnam and Korea,” Dwight Dulsky, Leo Club advisor and UMMS art teacher, said. “You have to remember, none of these students were even born when man walked on the moon.” Dulsky, who has been advisor for the Leo Club for the last three years, said that the March 13 “Then-and-Now” presentation is part of the club’s commitment to community service. In the past, the Leo Club, which is the junior division of the Willow Grove Lions Club, has …

The Upper Moreland Middle School has a new music ensemble, made up of ‘The Crème-de-la-crème’ of its music programs.
The long and proud musical tradition of Upper Moreland continues with the Upper Moreland Middle School’s new BOC ensemble. The BOC ensemble, which stands for “Band, Orchestra and Chorus,” is made up of seventh-and eighth-grade students from each of the school’s musical programs. “These are the crème de la crème,” Eileen Fields, UMMS chorus director, said. “These are the best musicians of the seventh and eighth grades in Upper Moreland.” Fields was addressing residents of the Wesley Enhanced Living Retirement Community, where the BOC Ensemble had its debut concert, Jan. 30. The retirement community and middle school are located on adjacent properties. Each of the musical programs, starting with chorus then orchestra and wrapping up with …

Students learn about the many differences and similarities of community members during annual day celebrating diversity and acceptance.
Upper Moreland Middle School (UMMS) students honored the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Friday, Jan. 13, with the school’s 25th annual Acceptance Day. UMMS celebrated its first Acceptance Day in 1986, the year that Martin Luther King Day was first official observed. Acceptance Day honored the Civil Rights leader’s life and message with an assembly, an award bearing his name, and many presentations which celebrated and explained the differences between people. Why Acceptance Day? “It teaches us how to all work together,” said eighth-grader Betsy Adeoye. Adeoye read the poem “Standing Tall” by Jamie McKenzie at the assembly. As eighth-graders, it was the Adeoye and fellow eighth-grader Casey Kerrigan’s third year taking part in the …

Hi Gerry, yes back then we were taught to care for our belongings, unlike Today were things are just used and abused. Back then if we lost or broke something they were not replaced untill a birthday or Christmas if asked for. Roller Skates were cheaper then a bike so you always started out with skates. And you kept them in working order at all times or you would have to walk everywhere....   more ›
