Upper Moreland Swears in New Chiefs and Officer

More than 100 people came out to witness the swearing in of the township’s new police chief, Willow Grove Volunteer Fire Co. chief and police officer.

The regular meeting of the Upper Moreland Board of Commissioners Monday night saw the installation of the township’s newest first responders. “This is one of the things that makes being commissioner very important,” Board President Commissioner Sam Valenza said during the meeting. “It’s very important to us to have family and friends here tonight.” According to regular attendees of municipal board meetings, the audience of more than 100 people supporting the township’s latest representatives was the largest of its kind in recent memory. Retired Patrol Officer Honored by Upper Moreland Township

Patrol Officer William J. Hoffman served the Upper Moreland Police Department for 33 years.

Upper Moreland recently recognized Patrol Officer William J. Hoffman for his years of dedicated service to the township. Hoffman officially retired on March 31 and the Board of Commissioners and Acting Police Chief Alex Levy presented him with a plaque at Monday’s board meeting. Hoffman was hired was on March 12, 1980 and served the Upper Moreland Police Department for 33 years. “Time has flew by and here it is he’s retiring,” Levy said. “He had a rather illustrious career here … He’s had several high-profile arrests, including an armed robbery who just robbed the All Night Deli, a robbery at the Thrift Drug Store, and he arrested men who burglarized two businesses on the unit block of York Road.” Hoffman’s family was at the presentation. …

Chief of Police Appointed in Upper Moreland

S. Michael Murphy was named the township's Chief of Police after serving for the Upper Dublin and Warminster Police Departments.

Upper Moreland Commissioners unanimously appointed S. Michael Murphy as the township's new Chief of Police at Monday night's board meeting. Murphy will officially begin his service on April 29. He takes over the vacant spot left by Chief Thomas Nestel III, who left the township in August. Police Chief Lt. Alex Levy served as the Acting Police Chief. Murphy began his career with the Upper Dublin Township Police Department in 1979. He spent 26 years in Upper Dublin before he was named Chief of Police of Warminster Township. Police Pension Board Applicants Sought in Township

The Upper Moreland Police Pension Board will be made up of five voting members.

The Upper Moreland Board of Commissioners are seeking applicants who are interested in serving on the Township's Police Pension Board.  Anyone who is interested should send their resume and a cover letter to Township Manager David Dodies. It can be dropped off at the Township Building or via email at ddodies@uppermoreland.org. The Pension Board is made up of five voting members and is responsible for oversight of the Police Pension Plan. These members will be aided by professional managers and staff. Members will serve a three-year term and will be appointed by the Board of Commissioners.  The township is seeking qualified people who have: Stop by the Township Building for more information on the Police Pension Board.

and why shouldn't i put up an allow everyone to harass me when its a simple as reading the boards rules and deed restrictions .. it shoulda been done 2 years ago.. but even my civil suit's were denied by the county for a reason of.. i cant sue people who have charges against me till its over.. just like i or they cant use civil documents to prosecute or defend a criminal charge...so he says he …   more ›

New Radios Needed For Every Officer, Police Chief Says

As part of the upgrade to the Montgomery County Radio System, UMPD will need to purchase 20 new portable radios.

Montgomery County is planning to upgrade its radio system in 2014, and the current radios used by Upper Moreland Police officers will not be compatible once the upgrade takes place.  “The bare minimum we would need is 20 portable radios to maintain service and operations,” Levy said. “We’ll have to determine exactly how the radios are going to be funded, and then at that point make a decision on how many we’ll buy initially, and then possibly buy more over time.” Levy also said the money will probably need to be borrowed, and not come from a grant. Upper Moreland Police Pay Tribute to 'Man's Best Friends'

The Upper Moreland Police Department planted a tree where four memorial stones honor the former K-9's who worked with police officers.

If you’ve ever visited the Upper Moreland Police Department, you may have missed a tree nestled in the back of the parking lot. Tucked away behind the building structure sits a memorial to the former K-9’s that worked with officers of the UMPD. There are four gravestones with the names and image of each dog that was a key part of the police force. Willow Grove Man High on PCP and Armed, Police say

The man was arrested near Kmart for public drunkenness, drug possession and weapons violations.

Matthew Isaac Cross-Harris, 21, of Easton Road, Willow Grove, was arrested Jan. 25 just after 9 p.m. following a report of four intoxicated people near Kmart in the 2600 block of Moreland Road, police said. According to police, a caller said all four of the people — one woman and three men — were “having difficulty maintaining their faculties.” According to police, the woman, later identified as Sara Ruth Dickinson, 18, of Lansdale, said that she and the three men had been smoking Phencyclidine, more commonly known as PCP, earlier.   Following a search of Cross-Harris, prior to his arrest for public drunkenness, police said they found a silver Beretta .22-cal. handgun in his outside coat pocket. Upper Moreland Township has posted its most recent charges made by UMPD. Some incidents are previous arrests that have now been charged.   Shakia Nida McCray of Philadelphia was charged with Retail Theft on January 2, 2013. Jonathan Ian Sokolow of Willow Grove was charged with Harassment on January 11, 2013. Mark James Cooney of Warrington was charged with Retail Theft on January 13, 2013. Michael William Pershing of Warrington was charged with Retail Theft on January 13, 2013. Steven Sands of Willow Grove was charged with DUI Controlled Substances on January 17, 2013.

The Upper Moreland Police Department recently posted its latest arrest made in the township. Morgan Armstrong-Feite of Pocono Summit was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on 12-30-2012. Kathleen Baker of Horsham was charged with DUI High Rate of Alcohol on January 8, 2013. Andrew Schandein of Willow Grove was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on 01-09-2013. Ramson Saint-Fleur of Philadelphia was charged with Retail Theft on January 11, 2013.
