The lights went out at the Intermediate, Middle and Primary schools in Upper Moreland Monday morning.
Upper Moreland schools experienced a power outage early Monday morning in multiple buildings. The electricity went out at the Intermediate, Middle and Primary schools for about an hour or so before morning classes started. Some students still found the time to talk about the incident through Social Media on Twitter. The school district has confirmed the power has been restored and classes are resuming as scheduled. The lights were back on around 8 a.m. Upper Moreland Primary & Intermediate Schools have early dismissal because of parent-teacher conferences Monday and Tuesday before Spring Break starts Wednesday. Upper Moreland Middle School and Upper Moreland High School are in normal session.

The Upper Moreland School Board has established a base budget so student-athletes and performers can travel to tournaments.
Whether it’s the varsity basketball team winning districts and advancing to the state tournament, or the band qualifying for a regional performance, success has a price. One of the biggest differences in this year’s school budget is the addition of nearly $23,000 to the Non-Instructional Student Services, which includes travel costs for student-athletes, officials, band members, the chess team, etc. The School Board has put $75,260 into this department, up 43-percent from last year. “We’ve had a phenomenal year,” Business Manager Michael Braun said. “We’ve had a great cast of things happening. The Upper Moreland Library has many forms of art created by students on display at the entrance of the building.
This week Upper Moreland Patch looks at the different forms of artwork produced by students in the Upper Moreland School District. There are a variety of different types of drawings and paintings done by various age groups of students. Featured: 'Distorted Faces' on Display Pennypack Park Landscape Drawings - Art Major, Advanced Art & AP Studio Art Classes Art students produced these works on site at Pennypack Conservation Park, located on Edge Hill Road. This was a great opportunity for students to draw from observation and to spend several hours with their subject. Many forms of art from Upper Moreland students are on display at the entrance of the Upper Moreland Public Library.
If you've visited the Upper Moreland Library, you have noticed the student art work on display right when you walk in. Different pieces of student-made art highlights the entrance with contributions from middle school and high school students. Patch's first part in this series looks at "Face Distortions" from 6th graders. A digital photo of the student making a "funny face." The picture is loaded into Photoshop Elements 9 and Liquify filter is applied creating the distorted face effect. The image is printed with a one-inch, square-grid overlay. Students make a light two-inch square gride on a piece of drawing paper and begin to enlarge their distorted face picture. After getting the basic face shapes on the paper, the grid is erased …

Parents can enroll their children for kindergarten, first and second grades starting March 21.
If you reside in the Upper Moreland School District, new student registration is approaching for Kindergarten and Grades 1 and 2. Registration for new students only will take place on Thursday, March 21 and Friday, March 22. You can register your child at the Upper Moreland Primary School, 3980 Orangemans Road, Hatboro. For children to be eligible for Kindergarten, they must be 5-years-old on or before Sept. 1, 2013. For more on age requirements, see the School Board Policy 201, Admission of Beginners. The Upper Moreland School District has released its calendar for the 2013-14 school year. The School Board approved the calendar in January and now you can click here to view it or by visiting the UMTSD web site. The calendar, however, doesn’t list individual events at the High School, Intermediate, Primary and Elementary schools, but rather the schedule for committee meetings. Some highlights from the calendar include: The calendar has four emergency days built into it. The Upper Moreland School Board adopted the preliminary budget that will see an increase of $77.29 on taxes for a home valued at $127,250.
The Upper Moreland Budget and Finance Committee held a Special Action meeting Tuesday to make a decision whether or not to adopt the preliminary budget that would see an increase in real estate taxes for 2013-14. Members of the School Board voted to adopt the budget that currently sits at a $861,493 gap, which was decreased from the original gap of $1,693, 872. The 2013-14 Budget is in the amount of $57,160,250 representing a real estate rate of 27.38 mills, and 1/2 of 1 percent earned income and net profits tax on all residents earning at least $4,000 per year. Business Manager Michael Braun said the school board picked up $266,119 in revenue while $512,260 of expenses was cut out. For a home assessed by the county at a value of $127,250…

Over the course of the year, the High School, Intermediate School, Primary School and Elementary School host a variety of events in all different genres. School photographers have been on hand to witness all of it, and now you can see the excitement that goes on in the Upper Moreland School District. Most recently, College Awareness Day was celebrated in the district earlier this month. Students and teachers dressed up in their favorite t-shirts and sweatshirts to show off their college pride.
