An elderly woman suffered burns after a fire broke out at Willow Lake in Willow Grove.
A fire broke out Friday night at Willow Lake, a senior housing facility in Willow Grove, which resulted in one victim being airlifted to Temple University hospital. Saturday morning the Upper Moreland Police Department confirmed that the 90-year-old woman is now in stable condition and can expect to return to Willow Lake later next week. "She is in stable condition," police said. "We're anticipating her returning to the home next week. For the condition she was in and her age, this is really fantastic news." Police are not releasing the name of the victim, but Willow Grove Fire Company Chief Brian Focht said the fire sprinkler system held the fire to just one room in a residential unit. In this View Finder, Willow Grove firefighters learned the ropes (and ladders) during the Willow Grove Volunteer Fire Company’s regular Thursday night training this week.
The Upper Moreland Fire Department’s ladder 10 truck’s mighty engine drowned out the buzzing of lesser vehicles whirring along the turnpike, just yards away. Willow Grove Volunteer Fire Company (WGVFC) members were clamoring in, around and on top of the fire truck, in order to outfit a large nozzle at the tip of the truck’s 110-foot retracted ladder. Once fully extended, and operated by a team of practiced firefighters, the ladder truck transforms into a powerful water turret. “It’s called a ladder pipe,” Chuck Jones, Jr., WGVFC deputy chief, explained. “It keeps firefighters safe.” On the evening of July 12, Jones and over 15 other WGVFC members assembled in a vacant parking lot off of Maryland Road, in between an unoccupied building and …

A rental truck crashed into a PECO power utility pole yesterday in front of the Wawa on Moreland Road.
At 2:02 p.m., yesterday, July 20, a rental truck crashed into the base of a PECO power utility pole in front of the Wawa on Moreland Road, according to Robert Drennen, Upper Moreland Township director of emergency services. Drennen said that the crash caused the pole to snap and hang precariously one foot off the ground, suspended by electrical wires. Within two minutes of the crash, Upper Moreland fire and police officials responded to the scene, and closed down the area around Moreland Road throughout the rush hour traffic. Power was affected within the area of the crash, and restored by PECO workers by 5:45 p.m.
