Upper Moreland Library to hold Community Plant Share

The lending library will soon be giving away plants to the community.

Looking to gain a few new plants — how about share a few extras?  The Upper Moreland Free Public Library, located at 109 Park Ave. in Willow Grove, will hold a Community Plant Share and Swamp, starting Sunday May 19 through Wednesday May 22. All plants are free to the community. Participants can choose from a variety of plants to take home for free, and do not have to contribute a plant to get one. Patrons Asked to Use Library Side Door During Front Door Repairs

Upper Moreland Free Public Library patrons are asked to temporarily use the side entrance to the library during repairs to the main entrance.

Upper Moreland Free Public Library (UMFPL) patrons may have noticed a bright orange sign posted on the front doors, stating that the library's main entrance will be closed from Wednesday, May 8 to Friday, May 10. According to the sign, the front doors will be closed for repair, and patrons are asked to access the library through its side entrance. Katie Fitzpatrick, UMFPL Head of Technical Services, explained that the front entrance area will repainted, and that patrons who use the automatic accessible doors, will be able to use a bell at the side entrance for access. She said that the front-door access will likely return by May 11.

Used Book Sale Helps Support Upper Moreland Library

The Friends of the Upper Moreland Library's Used Book Sale has raised over $80,000 for the library since its inception in 2005.

The Library also presents life-long learning an cultural experiences for its members. The Friends of the Upper Moreland Library help to support these non-book programs in a unique way: selling used books. The Used Book Sale occurs daily at the library and offers many excellent titles in both hard and paper back form. Upper Moreland Library Hosting Read-A-Thon, Medicare Info Session

The Gift of Reading Read-a-Thon comes to the Upper Moreland Free Public Library again this year! 6th and 7th grade Upper Moreland students can enter the Read-a-Thon for every book they read this fall, October 1 through December 31, and be entered for a chance to win prizes. Every month, a winner from each grade will be chosen by raffle for a $15 gift card to a Willow Grove business. On December 31, the student from each grade who has read the most books will win one of the grand prizes, a $50 gift card to Barnes and Noble. Building Bridges between Faith and Doubt

Humanist Association of Greater Philadelphia hosted Willow Grove’s Calvary Presbyterian Church in a joint discussion to demystify misconceptions about each of their beliefs.

Over 25 Humanist Association of Greater Philadelphia (HAGP) and Calvary Presbyterian Church members sat in a large circle inside the community room of the Upper Moreland Free Public Library. They were smiling amiably at each other, but otherwise, not really engaging in conversation. In fact, their gathering’s main goal wasn’t to talk at all, but rather to listen. “This meeting is not a debate, we are not here to debate. ” Dr. Anees Zaka told the group. “We are here to better understand our points of view.” Zaka received his doctorate in Christian and Islamic studies at Cairo University in the 1970s. Upper Moreland Library to Hold Open House

The Upper Moreland Free Public Library’s open house invites patrons to provide input for their specific library needs.

The Upper Moreland Free Public Library (UMFPL) is looking for some input. In its continuous effort toward improving library services, UMFPL will host an Open House, May 12, featuring a community forum. The forum invites library stakeholders the opportunity to voice their opinions and join a discussion directly with decision makers of the library. “The feedback gathered from tomorrow's community forum will aid in determining the Library's strategic plan for future services,” Katie Fitzpatrick, UMFPL Head of Technical Services, said in a correspondence. “This forum provides area residents with a wonderful opportunity to voice the desire for future services and an opinion of current services.” Fitzpatrick encourages all area residents to …

Upper Moreland Free Public Library Honors Volunteers

Volunteers of the Upper Moreland Free Public Library were recognized in a special awards ceremony.

On April 22, the Upper Moreland Free Public Library was honored to recognize 2011 library volunteers at a 2012 Volunteer Tea. In 2011 library volunteers gave more than 1,200 hours to the library.  In addition to the commitment of time that volunteers supplied, the Friends of Upper Moreland Free Public Library also gave the library just over $15,000 to support library programs and projects which they raise through the ongoing book sale and various fundraisers throughout the year. Upper Moreland Library Wants Patrons to ‘Check Out’ Strategic Survey

In celebration of National Library Week, the UM Library is asking residents to help shape its future.

This week marks National Library week. During this week, current and past patrons are encouraged to visit their local libraries to read with their families and make time to use their libraries’ increasing resources.   “Reading is a solid foundation on which to build a child’s education and a great way to spend quality time with your family,” Josh Shapiro, chair of the Montgomery County Commissioners, said in a recent press release. “I urge everyone to support this effort and take time to explore their local library.” According to the release, Montgomery County has an extensive library and information network consortium with branches located across the county. Upper Moreland Library to Hold Spring Cleaning Sale

The library will hold its annual used books and furnishings sale on March 31.

The Upper Moreland Free Public Library (UMFPL) and the Used Book Committee of the Friends of the Library will host the library’s Spring Cleaning Sale on March 31 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. "Everyone is invited to find a special deal and support the library by purchasing from our gently used materials and many other items" Cathy Gilmore, UMFPL assistant director, said in an e-mail. According to Gilmore, this year the library's spring cleaning sale will feature: In addition to the event, the library also holds its daily used book sale.
