Sixth-annual ‘Operation Merry Christmas Marines and Sailors’ a Major Success

Nearly 600 volunteers helped America 4R Marines stuff over 5,500 holiday stockings that will bring home comforts to Marines and Sailors serving overseas.

Over the weekend, nearly 600 volunteers worked diligently in the Upper Moreland Middle School (UMMS), where they transformed its cafeteria into a stocking-stuffing operation that would make Santa’s workshop proud. But, instead of just small toys or hot chocolate going into the Christmas stockings, the volunteers made it a point to include Clean-Lubricate-Preserve (CLP) gun-wipes and bore snake rifle cleaners. “We’re not a care-package organization,” Patty Lewis, founder and president of America 4R Marines, said. “This is our end-of-the-year ‘Oorah.’” For the last six years, the Willow Grove-based nonprofit has held its “Operation Merry Christmas Marines and Sailors,” event, which took place from the evening of Dec. 9 to the late afternoon …

UMMS Participates in "Children Know Peace" Poster Contest

Seventh-grade UMMS student Rachel Dolan will represent Upper Moreland in a Lions Club sponsored event.

Middle School students recently joined children from around the world in sharing their visions of world peace through a contest sponsored by the Lions Club.  Contestants were asked to create a poster that visually communicated the contest theme “Children Know Peace.”   The winning poster, which will go on to the regional competition, was created by seventh-grade student Rachel Dolan.  Rachel received a check from Willow Grove Lions Club and will represent Upper Moreland in a South Eastern Pennsylvania Regional Competition. Viewfinder: 13th Annual 'Fowl' Shooting Contest

People of various age ranges participated in a foul shooting contest which gave them a chance to win a frozen turkey in time for Thanksgiving.

Whiz Kid: Joey Miller

Although just in Middle School Joey wanted to get a head start on a potential teaching career by volunteering in the district's ESY program.

Many middle school students like to spend their time during summer vacation relaxing. Joey Miller wasn’t about to sit around all summer. Miller is getting ready for his final year at Upper Moreland Middle School.  He wanted to spend his summer giving back to the community and found a program which helps other students from various age groups catch up during the summer months.  The Extended School Year program (ESY) is a way for students to get help during the summer through extended work through teachers.  The program also looks for volunteers, and Miller jumped at the chance to help with ESY. “I always wanted to try to find a way to help my community and my school,” said Miller.  “They had something where you could help out some of the …

UMSD Graduation TV broadcasts and DVDs

Below are the dates and times when you can catch the graduation ceremonies held throughout the Upper Moreland School District—also, how to put your grad's announcement on Patch.

The Upper Moreland School District has made available the dates and times when residents can view the BNN coverage of this year's graduation and promotion ceremonies. Leo Club Gives to Second Alarmers

Upper Moreland Middle School students in the Leo Club help SARS purchase life-saving pet oxygen masks.

Second Alarmers Rescue Squad (SARS) will be receiving the donation of lifesaving pet oxygen masks from the children of Upper Moreland Middle Schools Leo Club.  The masks will be the first of their kind for SARS and were 100 percent fundraised by the children. The masks were presented to SARS at Upper Moreland Middle School on Thursday, May 19, at 8:52 a.m. at the last all-school assembly of the year. According to Jamie Haddon, executive director of SARS, the group of children have been fundraising all year to provide the lifesaving items. “Second Alarmers often gets called out to scenes of emergencies and have to improvise when helping out family pets," Haddon said.
