Candidates for Upper Moreland School District Board of Directors discussed issues facing the district and why they are running for school board.
The Home and School Associations (HSA) of Upper Moreland School District organized a “Meet the Candidates” event, held at the Upper Moreland Intermediate School on the evening of April 29. The event was held in order for the public to be introduced to and hear the positions of the five candidates running for four open seats on the Upper Moreland School Board of Directors. The candidates are (in alphabetical order): Three of the five candidates were present at the event: Camacho, Davis and Hakes, while Fix was reported to be away on a business trip and DerMovesian was reported that his vehicle had broken down that night. Patch visited several polling sites during today’s Upper Moreland Elections
According to judges of election in Wards 2, 4 and 6, today’s off-presidential year elections have brought an above-average number of voters. At each polling place, patch also interviewed Ward commissioners and school board candidates, asking them their views on their campaigns. --- Ward 2 According to judges of election Ann Hurley (Ward 2-1) and Ken Weigert (Ward 2-2), by 4:30 p.m.: 321 voters. “It’s been hard the last few years,” Ann Hurley said of past election turnout. “We feel we should have more in this ward.” She said that there was a steady stream of voters all day, but in past years, mostly due to weather, Ward 2 voters didn’t come out, but was not the case today. Early Life Kevin Spearing has lived in the Upper Moreland area since 1965. He attended St. David’s Parochial School, and is a parishioner of St. David’s Church today. Spearing is a member of the class of 1977 of Archbishop Wood High School. In his youth, Spearing recalls the township to be less developed, with many of his recreational hours spent exploring the surrounding woodland areas. Speaking in Veterans Memorial Park, Spearing pointed out that the park is more developed today, but did contain several past amenities. “There was a pit that was a skating rink,” he recalled. “You would just dump water in the winter time and it was an ice skating rink.” Spearing also participated in several township youth activities including Upper …

Early and Professional Life Shone Fix was born in North Dakota, but grew up in St. Paul, MN. In 1993, Fix graduated from Christ’s Household of Faith High School, after which he directly entered the workforce. His first job was with the design and advertising firm Electronic Easel as a customer service representative and production staff. The following year, Fix joined his family’s business, North Star Surfaces, a high-end interior product company, where he started off in its shipping department. By 1995, Fix was offered a sales position, and became a territory manager, responsible for sales in North Dakota and Wisconsin. Early Life Sam Valenza was born in Abington Hospital in 1956. Valenza, who is the oldest of six siblings, lived in a residence along Fitzwatertown Road from 1956 until 1974, when his family moved to Warminster. During that time, Valenza attended St. David Parochial School, where he is a parishioner today. He then attended Upper Moreland High School, back when the Middle School had a ninth grade. Afterward, transferred to Archbishop Wood High School, and is a member of the class of 1974. After high school, Valenza attended Villanova University, when he graduated in 1978 with a B.S. in accounting. He continued his studies at St. Joseph’s University, and achieved his master’s in administrative management in 1993. Professional Life Valenza …

Early Life Susan Worth-LaManna grew up in the Jenkintown section of Abington Township. She remembers being close enough to Mckinley Elementary that she walked to school. Going through the school district, she is a graduate of Abington High School. Once Worth-LaManna reached college-age, she moved to Wheeling, WV, in order to pursue her undergraduate studies at Wheeling Jesuit University. She then pursued her master’s studies at Boston University. While at Wheeling, Worth-LaManna was editor of her university’s paper, and once had the opportunity to interview U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller. She said she wanted to pursue psychology and the mental health field after witnessing her mother, a WWII auxiliary nurse, work at the Philadelphia Navy …
