Code Blue Emergency Declared for the Weekend

Temperatures are expected to dip into the twenties and teens over the next several days.

This release was sent in by the Montgomery County Department of Health. The Montgomery County Commissioners, on the advice of the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety, have declared a Code Blue Cold Weather Emergency for Montgomery County based on a review of forecasts from the National Weather Service. The Code Blue Declaration has been issued for Montgomery County for the period beginning at 6:00PM on Thursday, December 27, 2012 until 6:00PM on Monday, December 31, 2012. A Code Blue Cold Weather declaration is made in Montgomery County when winter conditions pose a threat of serious harm or death to individuals without shelter.  A Code Blue is called when the combination of air temperature and wind chill is anticipated to be …

Montgomery County Offering Free Flu Shots

Get your shot during National Influenza Vaccination Week.

Seasonal influenza immunization is an important aspect of preventive medicine, appropriate for people 6 months of age and older. Despite the availability of safe and effective influenza vaccines, cases of vaccine-preventable disease continue to occur in Pennsylvania annually. The Montgomery County Health Department (MCHD) is joining with the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PADOH) in observing National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) December 2-8, 2012. This year’s NIVW campaign reminds everyone living in Pennsylvania about the importance of influenza immunization. PennDOT Teams Up for Labor Day DUI Enforcement Campaign

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign will run through Sept. 3.

PennDOT, police, the Valley Forge Area DUI Enforcement Team and the Montgomery County Health Department will kick off a Labor Day DUI enforcement campaign at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 31, in front of the Target Pharmacy, 2250 Chemical Road, Plymouth Meeting, Montgomery County. Police statewide will participate in the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign through Sept. 3. During the Labor Day holiday enforcement, Pennsylvania’s effort will highlight the increasing issue of drug-impaired drivers and conduct roving patrols and DUI checkpoints. The Pennsylvania DUI Association’s DUI Victims’ Moving Memorial will also be on display to honor and remember those who lost their lives because of impaired drivers.   In 2011, there were 11,…

PennDOT, Safety Partners to Discuss Aggressive-Driving Enforcement

Officials will meet today in Norristown to discuss the enforcement of aggressive driving behavior such as running red lights, speeding and tailgating.

PennDOT and its safety partners, the Montgomery County Health Department, Buckle Up PA, the Pennsylvania State Police and municipal police, will hold a news conference and enforcement event at 1 p.m. today in East Norriton, Montgomery County, to highlight a statewide aggressive-driving campaign that runs through Aug. 16.  Representatives will discuss the enforcement, which will target motorists exhibiting aggressive-driving behaviors such as running red lights, speeding and tailgating. The campaign’s complementary education efforts will emphasize that distracted drivers can exhibit aggressive-driving behaviors. Township Provides Warnings Against Use of Floodwater

The remaining floodwater may prove to be a health hazard for recreational activities and well-water use.

As a result of the ongoing flood event from Hurricane Irene, the Montgomery County Health Department (MCHD) recommends that all residents of Montgomery County avoid recreational contact with flood waters due to the unknown amount of raw sewage and waste chemicals that may be present.   Also, wells inundated by floodwater may be contaminated and should not be used until tested. The township advises that MCHD’s public health laboratory continues to offer free water testing for bacteria. For further information, visit the MCHD website at www.health.montcopa.org. County to Spray Upper Morleand Roads for West Nile Virus

The Montgomery County Health Department has reported cases of West Nile Virus carried by mosquitoes in the Eastern Montgomery County region.

The Montgomery County Health Department has scheduled targeted spraying from a truck-mounted sprayer on Aug. 17 (rain date Aug. 18) between 8:30 p.m. - 11:30 p.m.  The locations will include Pileggi Park and surrounding streets: The county may add additional streets in the same area. Positive tests for WNV have been recorded throughout Eastern Montgomery County by the Health Department and residents are encouraged to use appropriate precaution when outside. Montco Has System that Could Help Predict Future Droughts

The Montgomery County Health Department measures groundwater levels through its groundwater-monitoring program.

The Montgomery County Health Department recently released the first findings from its groundwater-monitoring program. The program began in the summer of 2005 after a significant drought in the previous year made the health department realize they did not have enough information on groundwater in the county, said Kyle Schmeck, the county’s director of water quality management. “The health department felt we didn’t have enough data, locally, to determine whether we, as a county, were experiencing low water resources,” Schmeck said. The program now monitors 19 wells in the county, Schmeck said. He said none of the wells are being used and are not influenced by any major withdrawals that could affect the figures.
